Engine Mount

Hello Mates,

I had recently HGF and my F is in the garage for service. During the removing of the head we found out that
my engine mount is broken. It is exatctly this one in the picture



Now i understand why i had in the last time strange vibrations from the engine..
At first The black rubber down part is open like a flower on me allowing motions and also the bushes inside in this blue bracket in the picture they allow one axial play 2- 3 mm
and my question now Is this normal? Should this bracket be completely stiff not allowing any horizontal or vertical play ?

Do u have any ideas? Anything already tested?
Is it worth to replace these bushes with polyurethane inside? or maybe this will transmit more vibrations later
Or just keeping original?
I remember that someone has used Powerflex upper engine mounts (from Golf V) from mg rover forum org

Hi Alex, there is a polyurathene bush kit for this engine brace and Clive did a "How To" to fit it. You have to use the original unit and remove the rubber bushes to fit the poly ones. i will check but i think that motobuild do the bush kit.
Have you checked the top engine mountings for security and bolt tightness. these bolts have been known to shear off allowing the engine to drop.

i am sure that the large rubber mount should have some movement in it as the other part is a brace to steady the engine.

i suppose it is the lower engine mount.
I didnt saw kit for my problematic engine mount.

Alex, you will need to replace the bottom bush part of the mount. There will be a small amount of rotation in the blue part(in the picture) but there should not be sideways movement.

Unfortunately, the kit that Bryan mentioned is only for the lower engine steady bar and Clive's HOW TO is about re[placing that.

Which roll has that? To restrain the movement of the rubber part maybe?




I saw this one from one MG TF they have this restrain part.
I have the feeling that Generally many earlier MGF they have destroy their engine mounts during the time.

hey bud have you considered polybush themselves? i dont know if they do this bush but if so i would go with them

by the very nature of a rubber bush it will allow play in all directions, a polybush should remove this play

There is a polybush item available from Eliseparts which replaces the whole lot. It isn't cheap though at nearly £240.

like the red arrows in the following picture?
Bc I have the feeling that the bushes inside the bracket are gone and they allow this movement.



This Π Bracket was not on mine and i think i need to put it for security maybe it helps to prevent
the rubber mount from braking again and i dont know if it was just un update on the MGTF or should be there in orginal condition of the MGF. Nevermind Anyway it looks to be important

yes movement in the direction of the red arrows would mean worn bushes.

I believe the wire loop (no. 27) is just an additional safety device to catch the mounting if it breaks. i don't think it prevents wear in any way.

It may be possible to get a second hand mount from a car breaker. :shrug:

Alex, also check the tightness of the two bolts No 9 in the picture, a friend had both of these bolts shear off allowing the engine to move backwards and forwards on the mounting. :shrug:

Thank you for the info. I ordered now one rubber mount from Uk.
Is good to now what u say bc this part is from aluminium and can easily loose his form
so i will tighten the bolts
