Quick Question about the brakes..... was created by dext924

I was just wondering how good the brakes are supposed to be on these little cars.....
My last car, which was a 11 yr old Hyundai coupe had brakes that would stop you on a sixpence...
The little MG needs a little bit more pressure to bring it to a stop. Is this the way they are? I appreciate it is a different car, but you have to push really hard to get the car to stop in a hurry

Just wondered if this was a trait or if I need to look at anything.......
it past the MOT in April, so obviously nothing major wrong...is it just me???

There are number of threads on the various options for brakes. However while you are deciding which way to go (there are a number), I would change your pads for a better aftermarket version - made a a big difference for me. Again there are a number of choices, but the consensus was that any of them made a significant improvement ( Mintex, EBC Green stuff etc).

The TF you have in avatar as the 16 inch 11 spoke alloys,Something tells me there is a chance its a 1600 115 i could be wrong.

These Alloyswill not foul and are compatible with four pot red AP calipers and discs.Quite cheap for a set these days plenty on ebay.
Simple job remove calipers and discs, swap over for the bigger ap caliper and disc, they will bolt straight on as with the disc to your hub.Obviously bleed the brake system to expel any air drawed in swapping brake fluid hoses over.
Big difference in stopping power
Stay away from two pot ap calipers i tested them when they first came out, useless.

Brakes (spelling police)
The lucas brakes I find soft and slow to react under hard (track driving)depends on individual driving style. The AP have superior stopping distances.

The smaller two pot AP calipers i wrote about earlier in this topic.I done 80 miles on a south staffs mg in the trees run at moderate driving,They was brand new and i only fitted them as at the time a few people on forums who hadnt got there hands on a pair claimed they didnt work with 304mm discs,i asked how they come to this conclusion,i got no valid reply. The picture of them fitted on one of my cars says otherwise. Not impressed with the two pots removed them soon after.

I have a TF160 and a MG ZS Derv.

With the AP brakes all working correctly after a MOT, with no advisories, I very nearly got caught out braking coming up to a line of cars.

Against the ZS the TF brakes are poor.

I was only doing 30 odd and it felt like a delayed reaction, before the brakes started to stop the TF.

I now start braking a lot quicker and harder, the brakes are adequate, and once you know whats going to happen you can drive accordingly.

I did wonder if its due to my one only being used occasionally on runs and the rust build up on the disks can affect the braking. I do take it out regularly and brake hard on the hills near us to keep the surface rust to a minimum.

I believe a lot of the problem stems from the movement of the entire servo assembly. This takes up all the initial brake pedal effort, before the brakes are applied with any force.

A brace to hold the the servo steady really does make the brake pedal firmer and all your pressing effort goes to the brakes.

Versions of braces are available similar to (same as) Clive's design. I used a a simple bar between one of the air box bolts and the servo bracket. The brakes felt better immediately!

Couldnt,be nothing to serious, else will have been picked up on rollers at mot.
I find using a pump as apposed to manually bleeding aps have better results. There are two nipples on each caliper.
Brake bias can be a sensitive thing i recently fitted range rover sport brembos on my nissan the lock up was terrible,i couldnt revert back to R33 gtr as i had drilled the hubs out for bolts.I settled on 34 gtt which are only 4 pot and got much better manners.Watch any formula 1 driver doing a lap on the onboard camera constantly adjusting bias depending on speed of corner.

Interesting.....what are these servos then and how easy are they to fit?
Never had anything like this really, just thought it was adapting to the car.
next month I might treat it to the new pads and take it form there

I did wonder about changing them...

Its a 1.8 135 according to the log book and insurance....not sure if they are original alloys.....still very new to the MG ;)
