Posted 11 years 3 months ago #126408David, where can you get a ready made bracket for a Mk1?David Aiketgate wrote: I believe a lot of the problem stems from the movement of the entire servo assembly. This takes up all the initial brake pedal effort, before the brakes are applied with any force.
A brace to hold the the servo steady really does make the brake pedal firmer and all your pressing effort goes to the brakes.
Versions of braces are available similar to (same as) Clive's design. I used a a simple bar between one of the air box bolts and the servo bracket. The brakes felt better immediately!
Also, how do you remove the air box to get at the nuts?
I want to fit this mod before I go to the Track Day at Silverstone, so I have a chance of getting around the bends

Posted 11 years 3 months ago #126410I've been driving for 40 years now, cars and bikes. Many of them quite quick. Also had track only cars. B National Licence. Now tucked behind the pot dog on the mantelpiece.
Maybe we've calmed down a bit but still don't drive like a vicar and a nun. Far from it actually. Her especially :yesnod:
If you want brake mods...... try grafting on two servos, one direct and one remote, with a master cylinder on each: one front and one rear with an adjustable proportioning bias valve between for balance. Put a line lock valve on the fronts so you can spin up the back wheels with the fronts braked. Happy days. Normal for the 70's. for the borderline lawless.
The brakes on the TF I don't really have a problem with: ours has standard set up for a 135 with good quality pads fitted. Never had any close calls. I'm still not convinced about bracing the servo: ours doesn't move: perhaps they improved the later cars: ours is an 06 reg, built in receivership.
The problem as I see it are not so much the fronts but the small pad area of the rears. Meaning quicker wear and less applied braking area.
If I could be arsed at my great age that's wot I'd upgrade. But I can't. Be arsed.
Brakes: not super great but more than ok for the car. In my opinion.
It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..
