Got a screw in a rear tyre yesterday, so took the car to have it repaired today. After the fitter had removed the wheel he showed it to me. The inner wall had started peeling away in places where it meets the tread, up to two inches in one place. So I got him to replace the pair, as I prefer to change both tyres on the same axle at the same time, unless there's another years motoring on the good one. However, the other tyre was even worse. Delaminating three quarters of the way round! I'm off to Poole tomorrow, down the M27, so I'm glad I had a screw yesterday!!!! :slapme:

People have had issues in the past with rear inner tyre walls on the F/TF .... remember the rears do more work that on an equivalent FWD/front engine car.

Speculation is that the small 'island' speed bumps you see in pairs are in part responsible for this kind of fatigue. A standard tyre deforms significantly more than normal on the sidewall when riding over these kind.

Maragonis and Goodyears were two brands that failed in the manner you describe ... that's not to say others are any better, just that testimonies came from owners of these brands.

that's my 2 cents anyway. B)

I can understand that. It just hisses me off that the tread was only half worn, and I dread to think what would have happened if one had let go on the motorway.

I don't think the roads in this neck of the woods have helped either. Some of the pot holes are like mine shafts!

Back in the early seventies, I was pillion on a 600 Panther (if you know what that is!), and the rear tyre gave way on the outside lane of a dual carriageway at 60mph. Fishtailing for 200yds. When we came to a halt on the central reservation we both fell off the bike and roared with laughter! I think the adrenalin had kicked in. If it wasn't for the skill of my mate, I might not have been here today.

Off topic sorry, but my eyes misted when I saw 'Panther'.

I rebuilt a1950 600 rigid rear end when I was a teenager, almost 40 years ago. Sacrilege now but I built it chopper style. Lovely, if ancient, design engine: single sloper engine with two port exhaust. If it kicked back you were clinging to the top of a lamppost.

Engine was load bearing: no front down tube. Which Honda claimed to have invented in the seventies!

You know there is serious compression when you have not one but two valve lifters!

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..

Oh, the times we laughed when that lump of a motor kicked back
Strange, he didn't find it funny.
Ah, the Blod, yes. Quite right John. Best era for music, but thats only my opinion.

Best era indeed.
Ah, The Pig. Mick Abrahams and co. Some fine band DNA in there: Tull, Savoy Brown etc.

Oops, best get back on topic. Glad you found the tyre fault before it found you.

The Blod, King Crimson, amongst others, and later, Camel (my fave band).
I'd rather spend money on tyres than spend time in hospital.
I presume the meet is still on in Lytchett Matravers tomorrow?
