Would you recommend an MG to someone?

Put yourselves in the situation - If someone you knew had a sensible, 4 door, reliable, (German?) tin top - would you honestly recommend them to buy an MGF/TF instead if they said they liked yours?

I adore and love owning our TF but I'm not sure i would be so enthusiastic to tell someone else to go out and spend their hard earned cash on one...would you?

No I'd say get a cheap car as your run around and a TF as your second car. Although it depends. Some of the more expensive cars are more reliable but when they go they cost you the massively. Just make sure they get breakdown cover + have a few hundred quid tucked away from problems. I actually like tinkering with mine.

Yes and no, it would depend on who's asking.
If they posses, enthusiasm, mechanical aptitude and are the sort of person that can deal with the sort of the little unexpected challenges that an older enthusiasts car can give them, with a quick swear, a shrug and a rise to the challenge...... Then the answer is YES! :yesnod:

But if their in the 90 percent of the motoring population who view cars as automotive white goods instead of true enthusiasm, possess mechanical ineptitude in place of mechanical aptitude and are the sort of person who will have a tantrum because the bloody cigarette lighter doesn't work...... Just let them drive your MG and let them decide for themselves.

I used mine as a frist car for 5-6 yrs [from new ] with no problems and only now[ 9yrs] am I having to change things

In my opinion, no in the majority of instances. I'd recommend a similar vintage MX5 though to anybody who was in the market for a cheap two-seater. It might not have the famed handling of the MGF (that said most MGFs need major suspension overhauls now and wallow and crash about worse than an old MX5) and you can still get parts for a mk1 MX5. Not to mention the engine is pretty much as trouble-free as they come.


The MGF is too needy, it drives better than expected but it's still not anything particularly exciting, benefit is they're cheap and plentiful and you'll get "more for your money" over buying an MR2 or MX5.

Carols' cousin is picking my brains about MGTFs of late ... he tells me he's coveted mine for some time and is seeking advice with a view to buying. :broon:

I guess I should confess I've been subtley converting him over a prolonged period about the joys of ownership.. :dry: :lol: ... and recently emailed him links to here, Rob Bells buying guide, PeteVs MGF/TF Central and a few other sites of interest after his latest pestering. :lol:
