I keep forgetting to buy these as they seem to be one of the best legal bulbs about. Am I right in thinking these are the ones you mean: http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/H1-Osram-Night-Breaker-12v-55w-90-bulbs-pair-NEW.html
Thanks for the reminder David!

Posted 14 years 11 months ago #5188Those are the ones. Just double check that they are H1s in your car.Yves Adele Harlow;5186 wrote: I keep forgetting to buy these as they seem to be one of the best legal bulbs about. Typically, MGR sometimes fitted different bulbs when they felt like it. H7 from memory.
Mine (mk2 F) are H1 for both dip and main.

Posted 14 years 11 months ago #5258Some kits are suitable only for dipped beams and others are approved for use on main beam.
Main thing is to check that the kit you are after is DOT Approved, usually stamped on the ballast label. Talk to your supplier about this. If in doubt do not buy, there are some cowboys out there.

Posted 14 years 11 months ago #5261I e mailed autobulbs direct to ask them about the legalities of fitting HID kit and had a very quick response back from them.
Here is there reply.

'You are quite right, to be legal you need to have a self levelling system
and headlight washers. However although technically these aren't road legal
they usually still go through an MOT as the light pattern is correct. Also
if need be these can be removed in no more than 5 minutes (literally) and
you can put your standard bulbs back in.
It isn't road legal but we have not heard of anyone having any problems with
them. Hope this helps.'
i'm sure as stated above you must have headlight washers (high pressure!) and self leveling lights for these to be totally legal

What do you base that statement on, as I have seen a letter from the DOT saying that they don't consider retro fit HIDs legal unless they are type approved for the car (as a whole healdlamp unit), and are fitted with self levelling and washers.

It's worse than that, I'm pretty sure it is actually illegal to sell them.

Posted 14 years 11 months ago #5267The technical problem with HID replacement bulbs are that the focal point is different to a filament bulb like halogens. If you fit them to a lamp designed for halogen lamps then you can never get the same beam pattern.

Don't be like that. We are just pointing out that there could be a problem. A lot of people assume they are legal and it just needs pointing out that there is legislation that they are not.
It is up to individuals to make the decision on what they do with their car, but they need to see all the relevant info.
