Just spent the last 2 weeks rebuilding both VVC units and trying to get them put together along with the half inlet camshafts whilst making sure the teeth of the timing rod lined up with the splines of the VVC mech whilst also locking into place the hydraulic control unit...
Oh and ensuring that they were both timed to eachother whilst doing so.

There comes a time when even the technically minded starts to think "ram it, I'll get a garage to do it, its not worth the high blood pressure"

You need to identify the MG and the particular model using the clues below.

A company took approximately the same number you get for doing this

they are in the same county as the place the Martians landed, according to H. G. Wells

they also got 2.5 mpg more out of the car and it is now one of the most desired versions, often cars are claimed to be one of theirs.

Sometimes hard to tell because not all got one of these

(badge has been altered to remove name)

You need to identify the car and three things which made it special

Good luck

The University Motors MGCs?

"Buying a number of the very last MGCs ever produced (Roadster and GTs), a Surrey based MG dealer called University Motors sold these MGCs with Downton tuning together with custom paint and trim. One option was to change the front grille to match the 1970 model year MGB offering, as well as Koni front dampers or a Motolita steering wheel. Top speed, according to an Autocar report (17 December 1970) was 130mph and acceleration at 9.8 sec for the 0-60.

Sadly because of the legendary status of these UM cars, there is a large amount of claimed “Downton original” material which is very much not the case. Whilst UM cars did have a badge entitled “University Motors Special” this was only originally on some of their cars but not all of them."

Well done MG mad, yes University Motors, Surrey was the story behind the clues. 200 unsold MGC GTs were purchased by London's largest MG agent, University Motors and were modified both cosmetically and some had effective Downton engine conversions which gave improved power, torque and fuel economy. They sold steadily during 1969 and 1970 and are now much sought after.

This question has been asked before in the original MG Quiz, so a bit of searching on the T-Bar should reveal the answer.

If you don't recognise his face, he featured in a question 5 ~ 6 months ago.

 He wouldn't agree with some of the MG advertising ....

Ralph Nader, who, based on the poor handling of the rear engined Corvette and the significant number of accidents if I recall, wrote a book entitled "Unsafe at any speed". This then lead to numerous safety enhancements during the late 1960s and early 1970s with some wierd designs for pedestrian safety that are now common place in modern cars such as the leg-breaker to ensure the pedestrian falls onto the bonnet rather than under the car but just better executed than those early prototypes.

Source: http://www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/2011/06/25/in-house-designs-the-ssv-cars/

In MG terms in the late 1960s, that meant the MGB and 1300 got flush interior door handles rather than the earlier style lever type doors. But in 1974 the public were somewhat shocked to see the MGB given a make-over with big black rubber bumpers that not only dramatically changed the look of the car but the raised ride height was introduced to ensure the bumpers were at the specified height. As more than 70% of the MGB production went to the USA, the changes were universal although the US market had already seen the pillow dash, a big black soft plastic unit from the early 1970s, and the Sabrena over-riders were introduced in the 1974 model year prior to the bigger bumpers of 1975.

There was also universal talk in the North American market of banning open-top cars so most manufacturers were looking towards sports coupes and hence the 1980s were a soft-top barren decade with just a few small makers still going down the route such as Reliant and the Targa top style with integral roll bar.

As an aside, I actually met Ralph Nader! We were having a New York break and the UN were in session. Ralph Nader was a Presidential Candidate and we were held up by police as he walked across the sidewalk from the hotel to his motorcade. En route he did a bit of handshaking, and hearing us speak, asked how we were enjoying the US of A. I hoped he'd win so we could say we'd met the Prezz, but no. Mr Bush won. Hooray. :(

I looked him up when we got home: I had heard of him before. As well as his crusades about car safety, he also campaigned for safer practices on virtually everything in everyday life.

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..
