They are indeed the XPower roll hoops which became available in 2003.

The price you quoted was fitted, they were £280.59 inc. of VAT & UK P&P

Well done Ben, your turn to set a question :woohoo:

1935 MG R-type, and the only auction I can find is for the ex-Doreen Evans car, which sold for 130,000 GBP at H and H auctions.

"Last of the Abingdon marque's pre-WW2 racing cars, the R-Type was unveiled on 25th April 1935. Beautifully wrought, its revolutionary chassis boasted such advanced features as selective dampers and finned drum brakes. Powered by a supercharged 747cc OHC four-cylinder engine mated to four-speed ENV pre-selector transmission, the racer was credited with an incredible 113bhp @ 7,200rpm (151bhp per litre). Clad in lightweight aluminium bodywork, it looked every inch the miniature Grand Prix car. In keeping with MG's contemporary competition policy of backing selected privateers rather than fielding its own 'Works' team, the ten R-Types produced were sold to hand-picked customers at a bargain price of £750. Among the lucky few were Sir Malcolm Campbell, George Eyston and the Evans family whose 'Bellevue Garage' had previously done so much to enhance the Octagon badge's sporting reputation."

I understand some cars had closer to 150 hp, and certainly a lot were around the 135 hp mark.

Just before we move on a bit more about this very interesting car.

This was a radical departure for MG in that it was the fi rst British car to feature all around independent suspension and a wishbone chassis. Th e car had a single seat, 21 gallon fuel tank mounted behind the driver and a Zoller supercharger. It was something completely different than anything MG had ever attempted.

Here Doreen Eveans is pictured behind the wheel of her 1935 R Type

This particular R Type, #RA 0255, one of only 10 built by the factory primarily for racing. Remembering MG’s numbering this was the fourth car built. (All MG numbers began with number 251 which was also their telephone number) It was completed on April 30, 1935, and introduced to the public at the Brooklands Tourist Trophy Race on May 6, 1935.

This car was one of two that were sold to the Evans Family who ran Bellevue Garages in London. It was race prepared by Willkie Wilkenson and driven by Doreen Evans in that Tourist Trophy race at Brooklands. She previously had been a member of Capt. George Eyston’s, Dancing Daughters, Le Mans Racing Team that drove a trio of MG PA race cars.

So Miss Evans was no stranger to MG’s and MG racing. Both she and her brothers Denis and Kenneth had some success with their R Types. This particular R Type, driven by Miss Evans painted in “Bellvue Blue” (the “official” Bellevue Garages racing color) wearing # 38, made it 7th position at a speed of 80.63 MPH at the 1935 Brooklands Tourist Trophy Race. She later broke the Ladies Speed Record at the Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb with this same car.

A couple of weeks since the last update and as the next few weeks are going to be busy for me, here is the state of play

Tui has made a welcome return and gets herself on the new MG T-Bar Quiz pie, bensewell doubles his score to 2 and pendle lass closes the gap with John and Sue, which leaves them neck and neck in the overall standings.

Overall MG Quiz pies now look like this

Well done again to everyone who participates and manages to come up with such interesting questions.

It's now over to MG mad for the 424th question. :woohoo:

Hi all, sorry for the delay in setting a question - had a brewery tour and biergarten lunch/afternoon for a work outing yesterday...

Anyway, next question - what is the significance of this MGBGT, and what is non-standard about it?

The number plate as I thought is MG1 which is significant in MG circles as it denotes John Thornley. The MGB GT pictured was given to him on his retirement.

I seem to remember something about him filling the sills with oil and thus the car never rusting.
It is fitted with the MGB V8 aluminum wheels
It is fitted with the early style grille
It is fitted with a brake booster servo
It is right hand drive
It has the UK spec metal dash/instrument panel (these look so much better than the USA spec dash boards
It has the Borg Warner 35 automatic transmission
The car also has very well made trailer hitch mounting bracket fitted to the rear bumper and body. This bracket features cast spacers that follow the interior and exterior contours of the rear bumper. This makes the hitch fittings very solid and secure.
The hitch was used by John and Joanne for their gardening trailer!

From Wiki:
John Thornley

John Thornley was the General Manager of MG from 1952 until 1969. He started his working life with an accounting firm where he was a trainee whilst studying for his Bachelor of Commerce degree. During this period he helped establish, and became the initial secretary of, the MG Car Club which received the blessing of the Company.

It was John Thornley's association with the Car Club that brought him to the notice of Cecil Kimber (the founder of the MG marque) before becoming a service manager for MG in 1933.

He became the general manager in 1948 and a director in 1956.

John Thornley was one of the "creators" of the MGB.
