Oil Cooler? was created by bensewell

Lets just say I have the chance to buy one on the cheap?

A bit confused what it does / do I have one already will it fit? and what the true benefits are.

Anyone any ideas?

is it oil -> air or oil -> water cooler?

personally i would not bother with oil->air, and use a laminova type oil -> water cooler...
i would install it without a thermostat, as the water heats up faster than oil so on warm up oil gets up to 90C faster (water temp) then once hot the oil is cooled by the 85-90C water, and will not go over 95-100C which is perfect oil temp, and so you get less engine ware and a more reliable and constant temperature across the block and head minimising hot spots, and reducing the chance of HGF...

my 2p...

Oz

*edit* forgot to add i bought the oil -> water cooler off a KV6 engine (the v6 mg/rover engine), and im adapting that to fit with a trophy 160 oil filter take off plate...

Ozzy! That makes an awful lot of sense-Thanks!
Imagine...An oil cooler that helps your car warm up more quickly, then keeps it cool. :broon:

Well there is a reason that lotus Motorsport put 2 laminova oil->water coolers on all their Motorsport cars....

One warms/cools engine oil at 90-100c and one warms/cools transition oil at 80-90c

So they run gearbox cooler then engine cooler in-line...

Had one of their engineers explain the how's and why's... :)

I would run a thermostat on a oil cooler. No matter if it was air or water cooled.

Can I ask why? I can understand with an oil->air as it would increase the warm up time of the oil without a thermostat but with oil->water you lose the faster warm up benefit of having the better oil->water cooler... It would result in worse engine wear at startup in that instance...

Definitely run a thermostat with oil->air cooler though...

Like you mentioned in your earlier post. Water warms up faster then oil. You have the potential of the oil cooler actually cooling the water down. If your water is running at 90 and the oil is running at 50 (hypothetically) the higher heat from the water will be transferred to the oil. Slowing the warm up temp of the water.

For a price a thermostat? I'd run one

The oil/water is definitley technically the best way to go if the radiator has enough cooling capacity. Also modern oils are in different league to what we had back in the 60s. With the somewhat undercooled MGB I'm grateful for the oil cooler, and on hot days in congested traffic have resorted to using the heater in addirion as an auxiliary cooler :( . The TF seems to have plenty of cooling so that would not be a problem . One potential problem is that an interfluid leak in the cooler can have terminal results for your engine or transmission depending. Its true that you can get over-cooling of the oil with an oil/air. I saw some numbers taken with this arrangement on a car cruising into a freezing headwind, really scary but they were taken by a maker of oil/water coolers. An oil thermostat will overcome this but as we only ever use the MGB in the summer I dont have one based on the theory that if it isnt there it cant go wrong.

I also think they are piece of under bonnet eye candy and statement of intent ;) .

the water cooling actually has a benefit as well with the K-Series, as HGF often occurs with larger temperature deltas between the oil and water, and this can regularly result in hot spots...

it is actually massively beneficial for the oil and water to be at the same temperature or as close as possible all the way through the warm up cycle... this means lower temp delta and no hot spots which results in a lower chance of HGF...

i dont see why slower warming up water is an issue? you just dont boot it until it is up to temp, and oil is over 70Cish...

there is no down side that i can tell... the biggiest cause of HGF on the K-Series is temperature differences across the block and head.

This is turning out to be an interesting thread? My £5.00 oil cooler might be a go then :)
