As our MGF/TF's are essentially the same components as Land Rover Freelander Mk1 I searched ebay for an appropriate flip key:
2 Button Remote Key Fob Shell Case Blade For Land Rover Freelander MK1 TD4 TD5 | eBay £5.98 if you want it shipped from the UK
2 Button Remote Key Fob Shell Case Blade For Land Rover Freelander MK1 TD4 TD5
Completed
or £3.98 if you wait for shipping from China
2 Button Remote Key Fob Shell Case Blade For Land Rover Freelander MK1 TD4 TD5
Completed

Received mine today, simply remove the circuit board and buttons from the old fob and drop them into the case, only mod involved, trim the top section of the case where it touches the battery:

The blade slides straight in the MGF lock, having it cut on Thursday

Finishing touch? MG badge from MGB Hive £2 delivered:
BRAND NEW MGB/MIDGET MG OCTAGON SELF ADHESIVE STEERING WHEEL/GEARKNOB BADGE ZA34
Completed

Merry Christmas

not sure about the F but for a TF you'll need a different blade.

Key blade cut, in the back of Knutsford Locksmiths van, f.o.c. - so I have him £10 for a Christmas drink...lol

Works perfectly, fitted a new battery and a dab of superglue, feels rock solid. Here's a video of it working:

Just got mine today, thanks for the link and how to Peter. :broon:

Little tip, don't stand over the bin when you take off the elastic band holding the case together, as I did :slapme:

Thanks for the info on this project Peter. Finally got mine sorted this week. A word of advice to other people planning to do this mod. I did have trouble finding people willing to cut the key, even major high street outlets. Excuses ranged from "the material could be too hard, could snap off in the lock, could damage my cutting equipment" etc. Eventually when I did find someone willing to do it, because the actual key part of the blade was shorter than the original from the stop to the tip, the guy cut it wrong! :slapme: So.......I cannibalised my existing key and fitted it into the folding mechanism and now works perfectly. Only slight downside to this project is that you have to glue the two halves of the fob together, they don't snap together. So before I glued them together I replaced the battery! :woohoo:
