Story so far,I have stripped and rebuilt front and rear surfaces on my 1600 tf ,I left the engine until last knowing the head gasket would need changing ,on removing the head I found a liner split ,plus when I had a check on the liner height the were either flush or nearly flush.
If I was to replace the liner and reseal the other three would that bring them to the required hieght .
If all else fails where can I get a reliable recon engine .
Any help would be appreciated I have already spent to much.

Liner height is very important on the K series for the gasket to seal . If they are low you need to source some shims . Rimmer Brothers is the place to start or Ebay for a replacement engine or I would recommend MGF n TF bits as they are very good .

I'd bin that engine and get another, may as well look into upgrading to a 1.8 while you're at it.

To those who know....
What is the difference between a 1600 and a 1800cc(cvt) k series? Is it just a case of different pistons and liners?....different crank throw?...in other words what was done to get the extra 200cc out of this engine.

Hi,
Could not agree more with the comments above. Bin the engine, you may have all sorts of issues rebuilding the current one.
Blue streak, there is approximately a 10 mm difference in crank throw between the 2 engines, which makes up the 50 cc per cylinder.

Seems that 1.9 is possible without too much problem

Hi spec 1.9 vvc k series engine. Scholer 1.9 conversion, complete package
Completed

Though I assume a complete remap would be needed.

It all boils down to how deep those pockets are.Or how much you are to spend on your beloved mg....sometimes it may be time to say good bye and buy another car with a working engine...maybe a 160bhp if it's more power gain you want.or for those with deep pockets then a Honda civic engine or how about a low mileage le500 engine...they are about and they are the n series and not the k series.engine..makes sense when they have already had the modified head gasket and oil rail treatment. The 1.6 mgtf is the most basic so if you have plans to up power and bigger wheels and brakes etc ..then way up the cost after declaring the original car has been modified to insurers was it worth it?

Given the tuppence-ha'penny values of our cars on the UK market, why does almost everyone there seem so obsessed with giving their hard earned fun tickets to thieving bastard, scumbag insurance companies? :pop:

Do we really have a choice? Is insurance optional in Australia :-?

Pay insurance, or just watch the cars sitting on the drive/inside a garage/in a museum (delete as appropriate)

Of course we should search out the best value deal every renewal

But unless you are suggesting some campaingn of civil disobediance :omg: then I think we have to pay the

thieving bastard, scumbag insurance companies

:(

Of course if you have a bump, then you will be happy to have paid them :yesnod:

Here we have compulsory 3rd party insurance, which is part of our annual registration payment, it is administered by the government and covers anyone injured in a road accident, even idiot cyclists! other than that it's your choice.
You can go for extended 3rd party insurance, which covers you for any property damage (usually the other bloke's car) you may cause in an accident, or you can get comprehensive insurance which covers your car as well, these you buy from the previously mentioned parasitic insurance companies.

I didn't know that you poor buggers have to pay the extortionists at the top end of town
Not having to give my hard earned drinking vouchers to the corporate insurance racketeers, is yet another reason I'm glad not to live in Pomgolia!
You have my sincere sympathies.

Very interesting.....

I presume you would take out "extended third party insurance", in case you hit something very expensive!

Over hear you must take out third party insurance independently before putting (not even driving, just parking) a car on the road. It is an offence to have a car on the road without it, and the data is entered onto a central database, which the police can use to check.

This must be sufficient to cover third party costs including injury and damage to property (including the car).

We then have an optional "fully comprehensive" which covers all third party and your own losses (minus an excess).

Cyclists do not need any insurance to use the road, and this is an issue that should be looked at.

For a young driver the basic insurance can cost £1500 per year or more

I am 50+ with good driving record, and get quotes from £150 to £3000 per year fully comprehensive, so you see the market is very dodgy!

If you get hit by an uninsured driver, then you are on your own, and will have to sue the other motorist, if they have any money, you can track them down and prove they were driving!
