Aren’t alarms brilliant, as might have been said on the Fast Show. However in the years I’ve been attending this School of Thought, I noticed spurious alarm problems reoccurring on a regular basis & with no common denominator. My long suffering car acts as a test bed for various design jobs I undertake & a fairly recent one had me messing with the boot wiring. With the alarm activated you can access the boot by using the key & when opened the light coming on would normally trigger the alarm, unless there were an interrupt signal to the alarm module & of course there is. The job I was on with required me to spoof the system into thinking that the original electromechanical interrupt had operated, but remotely & electronically. This signal is relayed to the control module via the now infamous boot wiring. Assuming that the system of interrupting the alarm information is universal across the model range, you will see, if you inspect the lock, a micro switch with a red/black wire wiggling out of it, this switch momentarily grounds a return signal & turns the boot alarm network off. Any anomalies within the boot will create an alarm situation, unless that interrupt signal is received by the alarm module. I have seen an expanded foam moulding, designed to cover the boot lock assembly, maybe someone at MGR became aware of the problem & prepared this condom to make the system safe. When it appeared & subsequently disappeared is a mystery. Food for thought or a red herring?

Today I will be mostly sitting in the boot to see if the light goes off.:help:

I can confirm the small expanded foam protective cover was fitted to TFs in both 2002 and 2003.

And did it? You must be a small bloke if you can sit in the boot. I don’t know where the boot light switch is, a grave misdemeanour, is it associated with the latch?

You don’t get in the boot to check the light……..that’s what children are for.
Indeed you should always stuff children in the boot, that way you’ll always know if the boot light switch fails.

There should be someone on the ‘bar who collects & collates great posts where wit & wisdom collide for future members to read through just for there simple enjoyment.
There have by contributors, now departed to pastures new whose insightful posts have shone lights into dim corners & by the skilful use of language managed, in their retorts to those whose intellectual rigour & mechanical competence haven’t reached a level where a complete set of spanners is recommended, to find humour in this without belittling the contributor.
And there’s Cobber, a man who is the complete antithesis of all the aforgoing !
Here’s a chap who is advocating putting a child in the boot of the car to check the boot light operation & imply that this action could act as a supplementary warning system!
The fact that I thought of using a child to do the checks instead of the man himself has no relevance here.

I had a mate who’d lost a leg in a motorcycle accident, he used to help me out on jobs, it was amazing how many more places you could squeeze him in to do stuff without that leg getting in the way……….being the logical sorta bloke that I am, I reasoned that, how much more handy he be if he had the other leg chopped off…….. He didn’t share my enthusiasm for the operation, I’m buggered if I can think why!

I hope this thread isn’t going to become a haven for those who are into actotomophilia but.
I have a mate who lost his right thumb in a wood chipper which had a guard & safety switch removed to make it easier to clear brash, it proved excellent at removing digits also.
It was quite remarkable how much easier it was to get the remaining part of his hand into difficult places to the point of being the go to man when replacing a particular nut on a machine which was before the his accident almost impossible to do with a British Standard Working Man sized hand.
It is an obvious & well known fact that Japanese workmen are selectively breed to have small hands with the distinct intentions of making the repairs on their equipment almost impossible in the west.
Oh I forgot, I now know how the boot light switch works.
