I’d have them off & on the bench, you can place them at whatever attitude is best for the process you are undertaking. I also really like the Sundance titanium screw idea & his usage of the wire cutters as an Allen bolt removal tool. He might have been watching me, that’s one of my stunts!

On the fluid loss front, my dad used to use cocktail sticks.
Cocktail sticks were made of wood & it was harder & as it was me who cleared up the oils etc after I don’t remember much mess.
I now have blanking adapters which overcomes the problem.

The best thing is to use a suitable cap fitted to the end of the hose, or another way is to use a hose clamp, or a pair of vice grips, suitably protected with copious layers of masking tape , or pieces of rubber so they won't damage the hose.

Here are some slippers that I made up from steel tube, they’re to put on the vice grip jaws to protect the hose you’re clamping from damage.
I made them @ 35 years ago and they’ve served me very well since.
The trick is only use just enough clamping force to stop the flow, easy as they’re adjustable. Unlike a lot of the dedicated clamps you can get at the shops.

When I had to take a caliper off my Lancia I bought some red plastic plier type clips to save the fluid. You apply them to the flexible hose and they were circa £5 from ebay.

I got scared trying to separate the halves of the calipers so wimped out and have just posted the pair off to Darren with a set of new slide/ wear plates and bolts , a set of new outer piston seals, stainless steel pins and springs and new bleed nipples..
Ive sent the pads to be checked too. I had previously ground a bit off the top & bottom edges to clear the old wear plates so concerned in case they may be too loose when the calipers are set up correctly now. Ive got a pot of Brembo/ AP high temperature paint for when they come back.
Im looking forward to seeing how good these 4 pot APs are when they are setup properly.

It was definitely the right decision to send the calipers away.
They are now on their way back after Darren's team removed the stuck wear plate bolts by welding to them, The new outer piston seals are in as are the new stainless steel wear plates and a set of titanium bleed valves with covers. The calipers needed the pad retaining pin holes to be redrilled in order to take the Mike Satur style stainless steel pins. A pair of new spring plates in stainless finish them off,
