The standout words there are “decent crimping pliers “.
Here’s my opinion for what it’s worth.
The industry standard red / blue / yellow crimps are very reliable, providing you use the proper tool, ie the ratchet crimp tool.
I am of the opinion that if crimp type connectors are to be used, irrelevant of type, the correct tool for that part has to be used to provide reliability. Squeezing with a pair of pliers is investigating in serious reliability problems.
I fully understand that it’s quite an investment when you tool up to crimp inserts for multiple systems, but you are buying reliability.
I must have a dozen specialist tools for telecoms, computer & the ubiquitous auto crimps, I hate to guess how many thousands of these I’ve made off but the few failures I’ve had were due to me & not the tools.
I hate seeing folk who should know better & who have the correct size spanners, using adjustable’s; why when you could easily damage the nut or bolt head & in effect engineer unreliability into a system.
Use the correct tool & leave the job done properly & well.
