Centre console. - How to paint. was created by cjj

For those of you who want to tart up your interior with a bit of colour then this is how I did my centre console.

I wanted to colour coordinate it with the bodywork, which I thought would look quite classy, due to the colour.
There is also a how to on removing your centre console HERE

First came the rub down with a bit of wet and dry, to smooth it down a bit.

Also a rub down with IPA to remove any grease etc.

Next came the primer. I used plastic primer from Halfords.

Any imperfections were smoothed out at this point with a bit of wet and dry..

Then came several coats of colour, again, leave to dry and go over with very fine wet and dry.
Once you have achieved a satisfactory finish you can apply a layer of lacquer or two for protection.

I have to say I am impressed with the results. It is mainly down to the colour. In normal light it just looks black

But add a bit of light, or take the roof down and...

Mmmmmm. Bluuuuuuuuuue.

What grade of wet n dry did you use for each bit?

I'm going to do this soon, I'm off next week so by day its painting and by night I'll be assembling my MG parts / projects.

So:
1. Rub down
2. Clean
3. Spray primer
4. Rub down if needed
5. Wait 24hrs
6. Colour coats * 2 +
7. Slight rub down (this is the scary bit I'm not looking forward to.
8. Wait 24hrs
9. 3 / 4 coats of lacquer
10. Wait 24hrs and fit?

Nice touch on the technical grey centre console you have used.It as more of a keyed abrasive finish as standard. The OE MGF MARK 2 mgtf matt black one is coated with a different composite more soft and rubbery it tends to scratch off easier.

Looks really great, I'm thinking of sprucing up the air vents in a similar way.

Best primer to use would be an etch primer, this does what it says on the tin (sorry) and etches into the surface. I have used it in the past to paint laminate.

Chris

The firkin pointless indentations beneath the radio annoy me tbh: spraying the centre surround is on my list after the front wheel arch chip damage.

So I reckon I'll fill 'em. :broon:

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..

You could fill 'em with LEDs!
