Im assuming theyre fairly easy to fit then?

Im sure youre right re the failure - its a shame that such a stigma sticks to such a lovely car.

Ive been out giving her a good scrub out tonight.. its a shame its so bloody cold - new toy and no posing isnt good! Haha

Hi Andy. I too have just recently bought an MGTF and both myself and my wife love it to bits. With reference to the dreaded HG and the comments made to you doing it for peace of mind, I would agree totally with you on this. I have owned an MG ZR from new and being a motor vehicle technician for 45 years I have to tell you that I had absolutely no trouble with the cooling system on this car. I kept a very careful eye on the water level and up to 47000 miles there was no problem. One day the system was low , not by much but after not using any water for 47000 miles you just know that there is trouble brewing. About three months later and after countless cooling system pressure testing where no external leaks showed up, small blobs of oil showed up in the header tank ......... HGF ! The car has now covered 78000 miles without any further problems . IMO do it , then you can relax and enjoy it . Regards John

I have the B&G low coolant alarm, there are others.
The B&G is probably the most expensive, but as with many things in life, you only get what you pay for.
The B&G is very easy to fit

I find them an absolute doddle to park in tight spaces......joy to drive........eye catching looks.............I work for a engine reconditioners which means visiting engineering shops skimming cylinder heads.............k series engines have never been alone with gasket failure..........theres a lot of others with blown gaskets in the shop....fiats are common to but less publicised as the rover :tapfoot:

Yeah, very eyecatching.. i think the wife is sold now she's seen how it turns heads haha.

Coolant level was fine after today so we're good for now i recon, will no doubt change the gasket before the summer is out though just for piece of mind.

I worked at a Rover dealership at the time when all of the new 200's were coming back and having their engines completely swapped so i can understand a little. Its not like they go every 5 minutes though is it lol

I really really wouldn't touch the head gasket unless it is starting to go or you are getting the cambelt changed so are almost there anyway.

There are two definite camps on this it seems lol.

My thought was i may save myself the cost of a skimming by changing it?

you could open a can of worms so to speak............just because your haed gasket has not blown it never rules out the need to skim a head............not done many k series....but I build at least one engine a week mainly psv and hgv variants........have seen quite often chattering of the gasket into the head face........but then again it could be fun...................

After a few days of (proper) driving.. ive stopped obsessing about it to be honest, coolant is clear and not moving so im leaving it be.

There are far more fun/interesting jobs to be done for now - we'll cross that specific one if/when it comes up.

The other thing is that she has 101k on the clock.. theres a damn good chance its been done already :)
