Timing belt cover and wheel arch cover
Been told today that the covers for both the timing belt and inner wheel arch cover are missing on my MGTF 1.8
If anyone has any I could buy that would be great. The timing belt cover I need both the front and back section. It looks as if when the head gasket was repaired by the previous owner the garage forgot to put the covers back on when the reassembled the engine.

Hi Mike, you will have no problem getting the K series timing belt covers from any breakers yard or on line as they are the same as on the Freelander, Rover 45, 65 etc fitted with that engine.
The K series timing belt covers are in 3 pieces, the lower section which is directly behind the crank pulley, the top inner which is behind the camshaft sprockets and the top outer cover.
You will have to remove the timing belt and the 2 camshaft sprockets to fit the top inner and the crank pulley for the lower, but no problem with the top outer.
You will also need all the correct bolts for the fitment as they are all different lengths and quite a few of them.
The alternator dirt shield is bespoke to the TF but if you PM GT MG SPARES LTD who is one of our members he should be able to help.
Pity you can't take it back to the garage who did not re-fit them as it's not the simplest of jobs to fit the upper inner cover.
Also take care driving without the covers as if just one stone gets flicked up from the road and goes onto the crank sprocket it will cause the belt to jump a tooth or 2 and write off the engine.
Brian.

Posted 10 years 3 months ago #148173I hope to have an afternoon off this week, fingers crossed the weathers nice so I can pop the scrap yard lol.
Is there some where on here that would tell me what the bolts are and where to find them. I dont want to get there and not have the one size socket I might need! :bang:

You need 1/4" drive 8mm socket for all the cover screws, 17mm socket for the camshaft sprockets (as these will need to be removed to take off the inner cover) You will need to stop the pulleys from turning while you slacken the 17mm headed bolts, a few of us has made a tool to hold the sprockets so you can slacken the bolts image as below.
A 10mm socket and 6mm allan key for the timing belt tensioner and if you need the lower cover you will need to remove the crankshaft pulley which is held by a 22mm headed bolt, you will need a long extension and a long knuckle bar to get to this and it's very tight (205nm)
To remove the 22mm headed crank pulley bolt you will need to put the car in 5th gear with someone pressing very hard on the brake pedal then you should be able to slacken the bolt.
Attached info from the Rave manual for the covers and pulleys.
