Super Unleaded? was created by Squeaks

After reading the mpg thread and someone saying about the more expensive fuel like bp ultimate & super unleaded I am even more confuzzeled about it.

The Porsche is meant to run on this stuff all the time but only 2 garages on the island stock it and its 148.9!
while I was at tesco earlier I decided to put some in the car to see if I notice any thing.
it says in big writing under the filler cap Use super +

What does it actually do apart from bankrupting you every time you fill up?
is it meant to help with how a engine runs or mpg or what?

Dan :)

:D I may not always be right..... BUT I am NEVER wrong lol :D

Super is 98 RON compared to 95 RON for regular unleaded. Although I think Tesco might have 99 and the BP in Portsmouth used to have some Super-Ultimate 102 RON fuel.

If you're old like me, I can remember my Dad filling the car with 4 star. Super unleaded is roughly equivalent to 4 star and regular to 3 star. Back in the days of stars if you ran a car on 2 or 3 star instead of 4 star you could expect to have problems with it pinking and generally nasty running.

Modern engines are able to cope with a wider variety of fuel so the Boxster should be OK on regular unleaded but it will knock the performance and potentially fuel economy. So you'd best be careful with girls in Ka's when you're running on regular :)

The higher the RON the more energy per litre and so the more power produced ever time the fuel goes bang :)

Almost, except that because there's more energy in each cylinderful then, in theory, if you're travelling at the same speed you should use slightly less super-unleaded but try telling that to your right foot :)

91 quid isn't the problem. It's the 91 miles that it does for that, that really hurts. :(

They're smiley mileys though. :)
