I would put this in reviews, but seeing as the new shoes have been shod on a lame horse at the moment, I can only recommend Event Tyres on price, availability, and the personability of the fitter (Lindsey ... male) ...

Anyway, with the foolish notion that I can do most of the rest of the work, decided to get a mobile tyre-fitter in to deal with the most glaring MOT fail. Ordered 4xAvons to fit on the new 16" rims off Ebay - £320ish all round, ordered last week.

Two things impressed me: firstly, a call back after re-arranging because of work, and querying my choice of the same tyre all round because "they're normally different front and back" and secondly, just how damned nice a bloke Lindsey was: turned up, we had a natter while he was working, he fit the tyres quickly, job done.

Why did you decide to go same width all round?? Which Avon tyres did you go with, ?? one of our club members fitted ZV5s a couple of years ago and the rears have worn very quickly at a low mileage.

I have been running Avon ZV3s and then ZV5s on the Honda 205/50 R16 for many years now and getting good mileages. £75 each fitted and balanced.

I am going to fit Toyo T1-Rs on the 11 spoke 16" wheels I bought, I am finding the Falken Ziex 912s that are on borrowed wheels, give a hard ride and are a bit slippy in the wet

The 16" on mine (borrowed) are 195/45 R16 on the front and 215/40 R16 on rear which I understood was the reccomended set up for an F or TF unless you had a Trophy !!!! Am I WRONG? I am just about to put new tyres on my new 11 spoke wheels should i go for same size?? Also understand that the wider tyres on the front cause rubbing on the inside of the wheel arch liners on full lock. :-?

The official MGF Workshop Manual lists the correct tyres for 16" wheels on an F as 195/45 R16 84V on the FRONT and 215/40 ZR16 82W on the REAR with tyre pressures of 24 psi front and 36 psi rear

I've gone for Avon ZZ3 - same size all round. Got bored of Toyos on the MINI scene, so wanted to try something new, especially as they're British.

From what I'd read... http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/tyres/ amongst others, same size was ok. I tend to drive like a nun, so the benefits of being able to swap front>rear seemed to outweigh any other benefits?
If this is wrong, someone please let me know lol unless you need a hedge removing ... Arrrghhh paranoia!

:hgf:

I'm a bit perplexed by the wheelgap looking bigger at the front since the new wheels & tyres have gone on? :-? Might just be an optical illusion caused by the new rubber and shiny alloys!

No, sorry Bryan but you've got it wrong, mate.(or your source is wrong.)

16" wheels on an F should be 215/40/16 allaround, Except for Trophys which started the 195/45/16 front and 215/40/16 rear configuration.
This was continued onto TFs, so all TFs on 16" wheels have the thinner front tyre.

That is straight from my user manual/workshop manual/and all my knowledge too.

It is also stated clearly in the how tos. In fact it was one of the first How tos I did.

Further the tyre pressures you have quoted apply to Trophys and TFs.
The correct tyre pressures for an F on 16" wheels is 24f/28r

edit As an example my car is an F Freestyle SE and came from the factory with 16" multi/hairpin wheels with 215/40/16 all round.:broon:

205/50 R15 V Goodyear NCT3 fit to 6 x 15 alloy wheels - REAR only

175/65 R14 T fit to 5.5 x 14 steel spare wheel only

Wheel alignment:

Front 10' ± 6' toe-out
Rear 10' ± 6' toe-in

Tyre pressures lbf/in bar

215/40 R16 Z (Rear wheels) - 28 lbf/in ......... 1.9 bar

WARNING: The spare wheel is for temporary use only, and the car must not exceed
50 mph (80 km/h) with the spare wheel fitted.
Obviously, even if you have a full sized spare wheel, because most MGF tyres are unidirectional, you may have to fit the spare with the tread rotating in the wrong direction - so, in that case, the 50mph speed limit still applies.

MGF TROPHY MGRover RECOMMENDED TYRES and PRESSURES

TROPHY MGF- has a different suspension setup to the standard MGF and so you will notice that the settings and pressures are different.
(Be careful that you know which figures apply to your car.)

Wheels and tyres -(no other arrangements are recommended):

195/45 Z R16 Goodyear Eagle F1 fit to 7J x 16 alloy wheel - FRONT only
195/45 V R16 Yokohama A539 type fit to 7J x 16 alloy wheel - FRONT only
215/40 Z R16 Goodyear Eagle F1 fit to 7J x 16 alloy wheel - REAR only
215/40 V R16 Yokohama A539 type fit to 7J x 16 alloy wheel - REAR only

NOTE: Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres are directional tyres and MUST be fitted in accordance with the direction of rotation shown on the sidewall of the tyre.

Mixing Goodyear and Yokohama tyres on the same car is NOT
recommended.

Trophy Tyre Pressures - Goodyear tyres

Normal driving conditions lbf/in bar
195/45 ZR16 (front) - 24 lbf/in ......... 1.7 bar
215/40 ZR16 (rear) - 36 lbf/in ......... 2.5 bar

Trophy Tyre Pressures -Yokohama tyres

Normal driving conditions lbf/in bar

195/45 ZR16 (front) - 26 lbf/in ......... 1.8 bar
215/40 ZR16 (rear) - 36 lbf/in ......... 2.5 bar

Trophy Tyre Pressures over 100mph(160km/h) lbf/in bar

195/45 ZR16 (front) - 30 lbf/in ......... 2.1 bar
215/40 ZR16 (rear) - 36 lbf/in ......... 2.5 bar

MGTF MGRover RECOMMENDED TYRES and PRESSURES – All models

The TF has a totally different suspension setup to the MGF and the MGF Trophy. (Be careful that you know which figures apply to your car.)

MGTF Wheels and tyres -(no other arrangements are recommended):

185/55 R15 V Continental Premium Contact fit to 6 x 15 alloy wheels - FRONT only
205/50 R15 V Continental Premium Contact fit to 6 x 15 alloy wheels - REAR only
195/45 R16 Z Goodyear Eagle F1 fit to 7 x 16 alloy wheels - FRONT only
215/40 R16 Z Goodyear Eagle F1 fit to 7 x 16 alloy wheels - REAR only

175/65 R14 T fit to 5.5 x 14 - steel spare wheel only
195/45 R16 Z Goodyear Eagle F1 fit to 7 x 16 - alloy spare wheel

MGTF Tyre Pressures

Normal driving conditions lbf/in bar

195/45 ZR16 (front) - 26 lbf/in ......... 1.8 bar
215/40 ZR16 (rear) - 36 lbf/in ......... 2.5 bar

185/55 R15 V (front wheels only) - 26 lbf/in ......... 1.8 bar
205/50 R15 V (rear wheels only) - 36 lbf/in ......... 2.5 bar

175/65 R14 T (spare wheel only) - 32 lbf/in ........ 2.2 bar
195/45 R16 Z (spare wheel only) - 32 lbf/in ........ 2.2 bar

MGTF Tyre Pressures over 100mph(160km/h) lbf/in bar

195/45 ZR16 (front wheels only) -28 lbf/in ......... 1.95 bar
215/40 ZR16 (rear wheels only) -36 lbf/in ......... 2.5 bar

185/55 R15 V (front wheels only) - 28 lbf/in ......... 1.95 bar
205/50 R15 V (rear wheels only) - 36 lbf/in ......... 2.5 bar

EDIT:- It should be noted that on 15" wheels, many people have successfully substituted 195/50/15 tyres for the standard 185/55/15.
The 195 size is a more commonly used and therefore less expensive than the 185/55.

WARNING: The spare wheels are for temporary use only, and the car must not exceed 50 mph (80 km/h) with either type of spare wheel fitted.
NOTE: Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres are directional tyres and MUST be fitted in accordance with the direction of rotation shown on the sidewall of the tyre.(except for above)

I only took the details out of the official MGF workshop manual, its a genuine MG Rover publication and cost me £34.00

It does not contain anywhere as much information as you have published, thank you for your help again. :yesnod:

Most of that is out of my owner's manual. :yesnod: It sounds as if they've missed a line or two out of the manual you've got, Bryan.
