i just read your profile, it reminded me of this.

my parents, in their questionable wisdom, bought a brand new MG Maestro 1600 in 1983.
it was soo cool.
'warning - low fu-ell'

and those lovely twin carbs.

they don't make em like they used to.

My buddy's favourite trick was to handbreak turn his company MG maestro on a turning area outside the house (loose gravel),hop out whist the car was still going sideways away from him to the sound of "warning handbreak on" from the lady in the computer :-)

Happy days!

I don't know if it's in my profile but I had a day 1 MG maestro 1600 for a while - sold it on as I didn't have the heart to modify it.

I've also had the talking dash working in a mini and then an MG metro.

It may well end up in my current maestro one day.

That rocks. As It's old school solid state, are the sensors on/off or threshold?
Just thinking because I helped fit an astra gte digital dash into a mk2 golf and it was, er, interesting to say the least

It took the same feeds as the standard dash except the speed, the cable was replaced with a sender on the gearbox. The talking section took it's signal from the instruments IIRC so the system could be fitted with or without.
