Not strictly MG related but I need a back garden PIR light.

I'm thinking I might get a LED one as there cheaper to run.

Anyone had any experience of these?

We are just trialing some work lights that are basically the same fitting without the movement sensor. We have tried 30 Watt output fittings from various manufactures and found them quite reliable. The light output is very hard compared to the standard tungsten lamp and does not have the same intensity but for domestic situations this may cause less intrusion to the neighbors  !!

I fitted a solar powered one on Sunday, not to floodlight but give more of an indication that something had set it off. (hopefully never will unless it's next doors cat).

Not the brightest of lamps but it does the job where we wanted it.

You may remember Ben --
You can get these as security/movement sensor type. The ones pictured are 50w and very good

I remember that post was trying to find it in the search but failed. Cheers for that. I'll get one on order from our Chinese eBay friends :)

I've done a few jobs on the house, next up is getting my external lights sorted.

Do all PIR have the override facility on them you know when you first turn them on they stay on then turn off after a while they then go into normal mode.

Something like when you turn it on it 'warms up' for 30 seconds then you can turn it off then on again to set it to manual mode?

Just that I'm going to be fitting a few lights and don't know if I need a separate switch override normal button or not?

I want one PIR Sensor light over the garage for the drive, one PIR bulkhead near the front door, two PIR bulkhead down the side of the house, then one PIR floodlight at the back door, oh and the ability to put the front and back floodlights onto an override button.

I will get googling, then read my DIY book, then ring my sparky mate. Then get a plan of action. I have a spare slot in my garage 'box thing' that may come in useful for such purposes.

It will be like Blackpool illuminations :P
I have 2 per lamps covering my drive & only come on for 10 secs. when activated, but still had a complaint from people across the road
Pivoted them down a bit & all seems well now.
Trouble is that you get fed up investigating why the lights have been activated due to cats.
Still a deterrent though to unwelcome visitors..

The solar panel lights i had in my last garden were OK for a bit then packed in.

Are they any good? I'd like to hear from a user who has had them for say a year or so.

I've had 5 in my garden and down the side path working well for a year bought from these guys...

http://www.thesolarcentre.co.uk/catalog/Solar_Security_Lights-78-1.html

I've had one go phut and they replaced the battery free of charge..actually I replaced it..they just sent me a replacement.

Agreed they are new-ish technology but..they don't use any mains electric and they are LED.

Not trying to convert you....I'm happier not wiring everything into the mains with all the bureaucracy that can involve....Have 19 PVs on the roof too.. my effort to be a little more independent of big energy..

The PIR lights work well if you can site them so the PV panel gets some light...mine have worked all thorough the last months of bad weather...hassle free..
