with jaguar landrover ending production of the defender.............what can i say ....apart from what a fantastic vehicle they were.....the original idea from maurice wilks who designed the first landrover back in 1947 tested in anglesey.......this was the series 1...........then came the series 2,2a and series 3 which after a short span of the stage 1 v8s the 90 and 110 models emerged with there coil springs and faster more economical engines........built originaly from aircraft surplus alluminium......or to those in the know birmabright........proving popular with the armed forces...the landrover sporned many millatary variants....like the pink panther,101 forward control, and the..... lightwight designed to be thrown from helicopters attached to a parachute........the landrover has a large family tree and was also built in spain and called santana.......here are a few images that started a great story..

so from civillian landrovers, army, fire brigade, rail road, floating, bornfree conservation, tracked landrovers and heres the last few of my selection which include snow plough, royal landrovers and a landrover hovercraft.....not forgetting the riot rovers..........are these motors versatile or what?

Interestingly, do you know the story behind it being called the defender and not the series 4??

I've had four of them. First was a Series 1 which I ran in the Outer Hebrides in the early 70s, then a Series 2A LWB, followed by a Series 3 Air Portable and finally a 90 (there was a period when the 'Series 4' was called the 90 or 110 depending upon wheelbase before the Defender name was coined).

Here is the Series 1 (80 inch)

Richard

1.8i Mk2 Solar Red, 16 inch square spoke wheels, MGFMania hood with zip-in glass rear window, DRLs, Kmaps ECU, Pipercross panel air filter, MGOC Supersports back box & some cockpit bling

below 2 images of a model from the landrover family tree the foers ibex

a early series land rover for the gentry the tickford series 1

built under licience in belguim....series 1 minerva(notice the sloping front wings)

now this is where iveco take the defender into a new level the iveco massif

pto attachments were common on landrovers to power all types of equiptmen from welders, grass machinery, water pumps, generators, etc

and some models of the defender were streched to a massive 147 inch chasses .............the length was measured from rear wheel hub centre to the centre of the front hub

landrovers converted for the forest sported bigger tractor wheels

more landrovers that were made into hovercraft...vickers made these

It was from the 1990's judge dredd film with sylvester Stallone, about best thing in the film!!

Based on 110 forward controls and an absolute pig to drive apparently.

The defender name came about, according to landrover, when the 90 and 110 county land rovers were given a facelift and them being in essence series 4, following the series 3, they needed a new name.

The chief designer was mulling this over at home and saw on the news the British army invading Kuwait in the first gulf war in the 110 county landrovers, defending Kuwait!!

He then settled on landrover defender!!

Cool eh??

thankyou bennos17.............yes the tracked landrovers are cool.................some were converted in scotland i believe by a company called cuthbertson..................known has the cuthbertson conversion a typical one below

and others with longer rear tracks and steering front wheels are known has half tracks...the model below is called a centaur

these were mainly for milatary purpose, but forestry commision,RNLI,mountain rescue etc also saw the benefits of a tracked landrover.......plus the odd nutter that wants to scare everyone on a tesco carpark on a sunday morning............here some more images

A Pig to drive eh? I wonder if that assessment was from somebody who'd know what they were talking about or was it from some Hollywood limp wristed powder puff actor who couldn't drive a greasy peg up a dog's arse, like Stallone?
Considering that Stallone can't act.......why do they insist in calling him an actor?

Those tyres couldnt of helped steering at speed......looks like narrow bar grips on wide wheels......someone has glued some rubber knobbles on the exposed rim with some of that no more nails adhesive to give it that mad max look.......i agree landrovers are to manly for stallone

,

They were in landrover owner international magazine around the time the film was out.

One of the editor/landy owners did a feature on them and was allowed to drive one at pinewood studios.
