Ok I Know its German but....
Developed by engineers in secret at weekends and in the evenings just because the wanted to build a brilliant car to drive.
The Marketing men said "it will never sell"
after much nagging they reluctantly agreed to build 5000 in a limited run for homologation, they ended up building 500O a month.
It defined a new class of car the "Hot Hatch" copied by other manufacturers
The original GTI
No longer "the king" but forever "the Daddy"
A mans home May be his Castle but his Garage is his Sanctuary!!

A few of my mates had VW GTI's in the eighties when I lived in Germany. Breathtaking!
I had a Talbot horizon 1.5 at the time. That was also incredibly quick and agile. Awesome write up and definitely 'cool'. Cheers Lewis. :broon:

I'd wanted one of these since i first clapped my eyes on one.
I dreamed of having one in black and on my 18th Birthday my parents bought me a 'Gold' Mk1 Golf...Driver.
All the best bits about the GTi apart from the engine... :slapme:
Saying that - I did have it for 8 years and was gutted to see it go.
Even looked into getting it back once but it's gone to the scrapyard in the sky.
Have you seen the price of them nowdays? :omg:

I had a Mk2 from new back in the day. Great chassis and engine. I did 116k in it with just service parts needed. Main problem was that the cabin parts: switchgear etc bio degraded long before: I recall pressing the stalk to wash and wipe and the whole lot snapping off and dangling on its wires,
The current lardy bottomed GTI is about twice the weight of the Mk 1.
My mate had a Mk 1 for years: cool, not sure: innovative: definitely.

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..

I had an early Mk1 Scirocco GLi, when I say early it was registered on August the 28th 1979, the model only came out on the 1st of August, that is quite early. The original scirocco actually came out 6 months before the first golf.
By November it had gained a 5th gear, oil pressure gauge and rear fogs.
The only difference between the golf and the scirocco was the body, where the golf had a valley section in the middle of the bonnet the scircoco had a bulge, they had take about 3 inches out of the body line and 2 out of the window while keeping the same chassis, also the dash was 3 inches lower on the cenre consol than in the golf so you lost the top section.
Stunning little car, would run circles around many modern cars up to legal speed limits.
Only other car I had in that period that was close was a Alfa 33 green cloverleaf.....

One of my favourites, I had a 1.8 with full BBS bodykit ( in Mars red of course)...god I miss that car !.
I sold it to a young guy who was going to restore it....first thing he did was remove the uber-rare genuine BBS kit....then lost interest !
