Mk 1 MGF windscreen washer operation

Good afternoon all,

I recently purchased an 1996 MGF and have had it for about two months. I found this site after doing a web search so have been lurking for a while.

I have a query regarding the washer jets; if I pull the steering column wiper lever towards me, should the wipers cycle in addition to the washer jet operation? I would expect them to but mine don't. Has anybody any suggestions as to which components to check/replace?

Hi and welcome to the T Bar :)

that is the way they are designed I'm afraid, some people like it like that (more control over wiping) some hate it, some even mod it so that it does but anyhow it isnt a fault.

btw rules are you must show some pics of your pride and joy ;)

Hi Gos,

Thanks for the prompt response.

Interesting that it's supposed to be like that - very strange:confused:

Point taken re. the pictures, I'll post them up in the Welcome section later.

It does have the advantage of not making your wipers smear the screen in winter when the washer jets are frozen:lol:

It also has the advantage of letting check that the water jets have enough umph to wet the window first (common MGF issue)!!

Yeah, I'm already looking at the Citroen sprayjet conversion.

Not really, that's how all cars used to be until all the driver aids were brought in.

The problem with auto wipe is that once you have pressed the button you are committed to 5 - 7 wipes. Normally this is OK, but if you have run out of squirter fluid the wipers will carry on regardless and smear the windscrean which is dangerous. Also the blades could be frozen in place or there could be ice on the winscreen, both will damage the blades.

I prefer to stick with the manual option.

New TFs have autowipe.

Spray jets highly recommended. Reroute tubing under the bonnet so it doesn't use the L joint in the corner and you'll get better pressure and less freezing in the cold too :)
