has anyone fitted gas struts to their boot in place of the hinges?

saw a rover cabby at the last teeside meet, it had no hinges just struts, then on seeing my mates ZR i realized how easy it would be to get hold of some

on my old A4 i could press the boot release solenoid and the boot rose up which was just well... cool (i'm a geek at heart)

just wondering if anyone has done/ tried and failed this mod?

Go for it.

A word of caution though. When I released my boot the other day on a run the wind caught it and slammed it open and bent it out of line.

Took me an hour to readjust everything.

were you driving at the time? or were you just unfortunate enough to catch a tail wind?

Well if you go for it why don't you do the bonnet using one (or 2) of them to stay up instead of using a bonnet stay! shouldnt be difficult! at least that's what I was thinking yesterday, if you want it to look even cooler make the boot open via remote control like the Mercs :D

FM

Have you met Adam? Making suggestions to him are not a good idea. He'll disappear into his mums garage with a hacksaw and some sticky tape now. The bonnet stay was the only original bit left on the car. :yesnod:

the boot will open by key as will the doors if i can find a remote ;)

the other option of course is to get the clifford fitted (they have bottons for solinoids)

oddly i've just returned from my mums garage having used Teessides entire supply of sticky tape and hacksaw blades and my TF now sports a Rolls Royce pegasus jet engine

it still has a bonnet stay :D

I'm working on this cool idea. I think I found a black box which will do the trick. All I have to do is find a pulse from the Alarm ECU which I can hold high for 2-3 seconds. Then holding the unlock button for a couple of seconds will pop the boot lid. If it works as I hope, this will be the first place it's posted.

Also found another black box which will make the wipers work for 5 seconds after the washer stalk is pulled. Beginning to look like a real car, as well as just a fun runabout.

I fitted gas struts to the bonnent on my ZS the other day, a really nice modification if I say so myself.

Having gas struts will stop the boot slamming shut when fully open.
