First idea of active front splitter

Yupp its me again sounding out mad ideas

the basis for this one which was and still might be hydrolic was after I heard something on the tele about the new ferrari having a flap on the front which activates the front splitter

So me being me had a think

then being bored tonight used my highly expensive design tool "paint" :) and came up with a few pics and drawings, sorry about the quality and nothing is to scale or real

but here you go have a laugh, O by the way on the line drawing the dotted line is a downward facing flap to catch the wind and the separate bit is a spring to keep it up with a damper to smooth it all out

or it could be a hydrolic ram if needed to be powered, if not then its down to two things the size of the flap to catch the wind or the adjustment on the spring

before:

and after

when up the edges near the front wheel come out an round the edge of the bumper

and about 75% down

Not mad in the least, I'd stick with using air pressure to open the splitter, All though getting the the right size opening to have the right effect is going to be the tough bit.

i like your thinking B)

i'm thinking as the splitter comes down with speed the air will grab it and it will be fully down. which is good! but then your goinin to get the air having to go over the splitter wich will have to go faster then the air under the splitter (like an plane's wing) which will create up lift, not so good! so you would have to block the back of the splitter off some how.

how ever this efect could be much smaller then the efect of the splitter, so i could be talking rubish

anyone got a windtunel we could use?

The Ferrari 458 has vanes that deform at speed. Not sure exactly what they are made of but I think they twist to redirect airflow. Would some sort of rubber splitter be a simpler, but nowhere near as trick, solution?

Back with front wheel drive and 181HP at the wheels :)

i'm 99% sure it's made from carbon fibre and works like the front wing on the red bull F1 car this year!

a rubber splitter would be far to easy to do :P and i think it would flex to easy

I was going to put a sort of blank off at the back of the splitter, didnt put it on the pic because my bumpers different to everyone elses

That was the reason for its shape, I have a different front end on mine and the shape of the splitter mirrors the shape of the under side of my bumper

So if I put another vertical flap it will sort of come out of the main bumper

Also the edges curve up on the sides so should have a channeling effect and also help with sorting out the lifting pressure in the front wheel arches

But this is all guess work at the mo

If you had a vented bonnet then you could just have a springy flap that moves lower the faster you go, with the air being directed up, through the rad and out through the bonnet. This would mean, the faster you go, the less air travels under the car and more travels up and over the car.
