(now now people, this is a family forum)

My car smells. Has done since I got it as it was about as leakproof as the Con-Dem(ed) cabinet

All leaks have been fixed for a while, but cat still smells. its more than damp, its like a rotting/damp.

I have removed and cleaned floor carpets, sound deadening material, seats etc, and it just keeps coming back. I think it might be the hood? When you sniff it directly you cant tell its the hood, but when its been warma nd hood is warm, the smell is worse and seems to hang around in the top half of the cabin...

Has anyone heard of this before?

Any way of giving it a proper treatment whilst its still on the car (i.e. more than a wipe), or should I just remove the whole hood and do it off car?

I assume its easy to remove hood and put it back if on the same car?

It's not you is it, Iain?
Should be easy to use a Kitchen type disinfectant spray on the inside/ outside of the roof. Then a regular hood cleaner. Should sort it, if that's the source.

Maybe give the entire interior a clean with the Aldi antibacterial dash cleaner that Paul featured. If you have an Aldi, of course.

Febreeze doesnt help, tried that. There's not an Aldi nearby, but there's one about 7 miles away, not the end of the world I guess

I would use my rock salt moisture trap to draw all moisture out of the hood to make sure it is completly and utterley dry. And a half lemon or some lemon juice is good at nuetralising strong organic smells.

Ive had moisture traps in it for 6 months. Theres no moisture in the car, never get steamy screen, but the smell just lingers. Might try some lemon. cheers

I had exactly the same problem in my MG Honda ( Honda Accord Executive Sport Hatch) could not be a smelly hood because it does not have one, checked on the sunroof gutter for blockages and evil growts in any trapped water, all ok. Next check was the air con coil which is in the passenger footwell and are known for growing evil slime if the condensate drain is blocked, all found to be ok and clean. then i discovered the culprit >>>>>> it was the windscreen washer liquid!!!!!!!!!! although i always use a good washer fluid in there (the VAG one is magic and smell lovely when fresh) i could not get to the massive bottle to get it out as it is buried somewher inside the front bumper. i emptied it with the pump, poured in aboiut 250ml of neat VAG fluid, about 2 litres of clean water and pumped this through all pipes and jets (windscreen, tailgate and headlamps until empty ~ filled with fresh water (7 litres) and pumped this out again through all jets. filled with fresh water and a double dose of fluid and guess what?? the evil smell had gone :woohoo: at the first sign of it returning i repeat the process  As a matter of interest Roger Parker MGOC wrote an article about cleaning out the washer bottle on an F (although he did one on a ZS) due to the same problem of evil smells ~ try this and see if it works, also check that the air box intake is draining proprley, because the pipes get blocked and the evil liquid build up it also leeaks in past the seals on the fresh air intake box and d ribbles down behind the carpet in the footwell. Hope this all helps to find your PONG!!!

Thanks Bryan!

I am sure its not the washer bottle as I cleaned it out when I first got the car, and the smell has always been there. I also use some pretty strong fluid up here in winter and fill it up a lot as we spend half of the year with salt on the roads , so I am in and ouit the bottle quite regularly.

Never thought of water bloackages. Its not coming in the cabin as the carpets are bone dry each side (was my goals after I bought it as it was previously used as a mobile swimming pool).

I'll check the air intake and other drain points, cheers ;)

My heater box doesn't go to "floor" direction, something is stuck, I am sure its a dead animal or something in there

Failing that, I washed and bleached and everything with respect to the carpets and deadening material, but to be honest one of my next steps is to buy brand new undercarpet sound deadening as its not really that expensive...

I'll get it in the end

thanks for the suggestions
