EPAS or not, that is the question!!. was created by bryan young

I have a 1996 Mk 1 MGF(made 04/09/1996) it has ABS fitted which was not standard at the time and i would like to know if it also has EPAS?? not standard on the 1.8 mpi until 1999 . There is a thick brown wire coming from the battery positive terminal into a 70 amp fuse holder (fitted with a 40amp fuse) which according to the handbook is the EPAS fuse.

Thank you in advance. ;)

You are correct about the 40 Amp fuse.

Quick answer. If you remove the fuse and you had EPAS you will now feel a very big difference, if there is no change, you never had it.

or dive down into the footwell and have a look upwards to the end of the steering assembly.

You should have EPAS if there's a motor visible

I understand that EPAS was standard on the VVC but not standard on the 1.8mpi until 1999 (according to Rob Bell) ABS had to be ordered as a factory fitted extra too. :yesnod:

EPAS wasn't standard on MGF 1.8i at launch (it was deemed the car didn't need it with the engine being in the back!). I would think the easiest way to tell is to start the car up and see if the EPAS warning light comes on and then goes off on the dash display? From memory, it's a yellow warning light with a picture of a steering wheel on it.

My 1996 MPi doesn't have EPAS. I am thinking of installing an EPAS column mainly to get the tilt function for a bit more leg clearance.
I don't mind the steering effort as it is but I wouldn't say no to a bit of boost.

Doh, :nonod:

See what's happened, we spend so long looking for the obscure answer because of that MG Quiz we miss the blooming obvious

Thank you John

Teeny Weeny problem with that approach, my F has no front suspension or front brakes at the moment and no battery so the obvious could not be done :nonod: a quick shufti in the footwell revealed the EPAS in all its glory and from Deiters pictures could see which model. :woohoo:

Thing is Brian, I didn't know you had taken it to pieces :)! At least you know now and will be able to turn the steering much more easily when you've glued it back together :)!
