the past year I have taken both a mgf and a tf apart to see where these cars could be improved.the problem is they where built from a parts bin,and it was from a metro.and small city car into a sports cars.Items where used with cost in mind .rover didnt do a bad job but it could have been a better job.
so what did i do,well I have race car experiance and a great deal of idea of how things work.
changing the cars dna isnt ever going to wort, rover built a roadster and it will always be that.
So after looking at many tf the rust on the sub frames is bad,the rubber bushes where cheap the the dampers where also poor quality.the tf springs are basic and the mgf to be honest started with a maxi in the 70s.
so subframe coating to cancel rust.poly bush the suspension.set up the tracking ,rover simply didnt get that right.every factory setting followed a metro set up.and front engined car not a rear engined car.
then use springs that harden under load.so conering, braking they are stiff, pottering around they are soft.
The clutch .again out of a front wheel drive car,so an improved clutch is fitted.cooling system has been improved, again it has a water pump that is for a front wheel drive set up with the rad next to the engine.Rover had designed a system to improve the cooling, but dropped it for cost reasons.we have fitted it total cost is around £60 improvement. If they had fitted this improvement then the head gaskets issue may no have risen.
The engine, this was ahead of its time but good old rover messed that up as well, simple things have given around 10bhp over the standard unit.
So we now have a mgf/tf that is whatt it should have been in the first place. It will out corner and out run a e36 m3 bmw .that is what we wanted to do and we have,
Some of the tf we had in our workshop, took up two lanes of a motorway if you wanted to drive fast, top speed well was a joke for a sports car.handling well we struggled to keep up with a saxo gti.We know have a car that can be thrown into a corner at speed, can stop at speed and can below 80mph see off a m3 e36 bmw on the test track.in fact its not to far behind a lotus.
Rover simply put a roadster body on a city car rolling chassis and expected it to work, bmw didnt want the mgf to even be built. If rover had been allowed to improve the car with the help they where offered then it would be what we have built
