Got mot....now looks like got coolant leak

Well, the past week ive noticed that my coolant had dropped ever so slightly according to the mark i had made on the side of the expansion bottle so thought nothing of it and topped up a little.

Then yesterday with despair starting to build up thinking about it i checked again and the level had gone down past the plastic lug inside the expansion bottle :frown:

Topped up again with bit of OAT and carried on, but when i got home and checked the level i noticed the pink dried staining you get from coolant leaking down the block, and it was at the back of the engine underneath the intake manifold. Ive looked elsewhere over the car and can see no other visible leaks and thankfully my oil is still clean as a whistle!

Now my brain instatly thought.......NOOOOOOO, but i remembered when i did my headgasket, that a lot of coolant went splashing all over the place and thought maybe it was just staining left from that, well, im hoping it is!

But the question i would like to ask the gurus is this, would a drop in temperature of the enviroment affect the level of coolant as in expansion/contraction etc and im just being paranoid? Orrrr, am i looking at another thing needing fixing to add to my list of jobs to do in the winter months?

That sounds like the inlet manifold gasket leaking. Is it the plastic manifold? Have a feel under the manifold at the throttle body end. If it's wet/damp then it's almost certainly the gasket.

Thats what i kinda thought, but all the gaskets were replaced when i had the headgasket done in summer.

In a way i DO hope its just that cus i suppose it shudnt be too hard to whip inlet off and replace the gasket again!

Came out of work and shone a torch as far as i cud get it up towards back of manifold cus i cudnt fit my hand up that far and lo and behold........a small trickle of nice pinky coloured coolant running down from the far left of the manifold :frown:

One thing came to mind though after i spoke to my friend who is a rover mechanic who said "is it misfiring when cold?"

And i thought to myself....yes, for the past week in the morning from cold it has seemed a bit more lumpy than usual for the first few minutes, to which he replied "coolant leaking into number 1 cylinder mate!"

Suppose i shud get the gasket ordered and get it done on Saturday then! Ho-HUM, im starting to learn that even if you fix something on a rover, theres no guarantee it wont go again in the very near future!!

Ive got a question tho after looking at pics of the inlet manifold......

Looking at this pic....



Mine is leaking from what i can see, from underneath/side of the manifold nearest to you, buuuuut, i know there is a water pipe on the other end of the manifold, but does water flow near the other end nearest to you in the pic?

Spot the deliberate mistake in the first picture and the pretty pinkness in the second one!

I've help take slave 1 to bits before...but when I tried to change the aerial I broke it :frown: :lol:

Well, my aerial is sorted so I dont have to let you loose on that - you can come and help with the rest of it - after all, I HAVE SEEN THE VIDEO'S..!!

lololol its not that bad mate, i was suprised how not bad it was when me and a mate did the headgasket.

No worries - but making a strat on them..?? not sure about that :shake:
