Sooty Exhaust

Sooty Exhaust was created by Davem

My exhaust looks a bit sooty and feels a bit greasy, as in the picture. I guess its running a little rich.
The engine is running well , idling smoothly, reeving freely and accelerating pleasingly. No oil or coolant problems. Its running so well that I am inclined to leave it alone but keep an eye on it?
Appreciate any thoughts :-? :-? What could cause this. :-?

You've just reminded me that in the days before diesel became so popular you would spend someting looking down exhaust pipes to devine the state of the engine. 'Light grey' was the colour of choice. Running rich would sound right for what you are seeing but are you doing lots of short journeys - ie the engine is not warming-up adequatetly? Another running rich issue can be a partially blocked air filter - when was it last changed?

Short journeys or limited use can display these symptoms on a healthy engine: a spirited cruise after wiping the tailpipes clean for later comparison may help.

Even if it doesn't cure it ...........its damn good fun!

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..

Thanks for thoughts. Air filter is fine but you may have "hit the nail on the head" short infrequent runs is what its been doing for a while now. It been doing a 25km round trip about once a week (or more) to check the mail. I better go for a good drive. :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Umm Anyway
Cleaned up the exhaust pipes with a rag then took the MG for a great run of about 120 kms and the exhaust is as clean as when I left. So that's all that was needed a good run to blow the cobwebs out.
Note to myself --- take sweetie for a big run often.
Thanks for helpful advice and patience with my mg paranoia .
Thanks for info on the real Sooty
