Oil Leak (small) from Distributor cap

I've just discovered a very small oil leak coming from behind the distributor cap on my mk1 (non-vvc).

There's not oil in the cap itself but it definitely looks like there is some sort of leak from behind the plastic plate going onto the engine.

so, 2 questions..

1.> Can anyone let me know what that particular seal is called/part number? (link if possible)

2.> Is it easy enough to replace or is it a "send it to a garage job"?

Thanks in advance

That would be the camshaft seal that is leaking. It can be done easily by removing the distributor and then removing old seal carefully with a little hook type tool. Don't scratch the shaft. Find something that will fit over new seal just right and tap it back into place. Outside surface of new seal should not be lubricated. You are lucky because if it was the seal on the other end of the camshaft you would have to remove the cambelt and pulleys.

I suggest using a genuine seal as I had trouble with non genuine leaking.

Thank you for your quick reply Davem.

It's not a huge leak, but its best to fix these things. I'll order a new genuine one and take it from there.

I've already fitted a new distributor cap so I'm well up to speed with taking it off. Just wanted to check that it didn't require some sort of very special tool or something similar.

When you say about "lubrication" I assume you mean a bit of clean normal engine oil on the inside edge, but not on the side facing the distributor cap.

Then I just use something of a similar diameter to the seal (plus a hammer) to gently bash it in to place and make sure the edge of the seal is flush/slightly recessed.

Cheers again.

Have a good look at position of the seal in the head before you remove it so it ends back in the same spot. It will only go back in so far as there is a lip to stop it.
You will need something deep to push it back in as the camshaft is extra long there for the distributor. I think I used a 3/4 socket. Maybe a bit of pipe and the old seal.?
The new seal needs to be firm in the head when finished thats why you don't oil the outer perimeter of the seal. Clean where its going to sit with some solvent so its oil free.
Take some pics if you can and let us know how it goes. :broon:
