MGF air box

MGF air box was created by nigel0903

Morning all. On my F the air box only has the one air feed at the rear of the box. I am thinking of putting another intake pipe in the front of the box and using the near side air scoop as cold air feed. Has anyone done this mod and is there any benefit to it?
Thanks in advance. Nigel

Nope not done it but unless you also route the rear intake to a cold outside source then it's not worth the time as the air box will still be takign in warm and hot air from the engine bay. The whole idea of routing the intake hose to the side vents is to draw cool and cold air from outside the engine bay.

I have fitted a larget TF air filter and although it was removed from a TF 135 it only had the rear intake. So I cut out the front and moved the intake horn to the front and blanked off the original rear feed and have routed the original hose to the N/S intake and it fits nicely sitting just inside the intake vent. Of course have also removed the resonator box. The next step was to fit a performance panel filter the the filter box.

I watched a vid on youtube about performance panel & cone filters, on a rolling road test against stock paper ones they showed no significant improvement overall. Mixed with a cold air feed should show an improvement but am i right by thinking you also get a better sound? Mine just dosent roar when you put your foot down.

I swapped my F air box to a 160 air box with the twin feed.I routed only one of the pipes to the side intake as the other was to short.
It did seem to improve the response of my old car and I would say it was a worthwhile mod.
If you do decide to go down this path you will need the 160 air box mount as well as the box and intake pipes,I picked them all up from a breaker for around £30.I took out the resonator box to give me more room.
If you are just planning on modifying the F air box by adding another intake pipe it will be very tricky there is very little room to work in and even less to run the intake pipes as the resonator box and hydrogas pipes get in the way.
Here's a snap with the air box out to show you what I mean.

This is the TF box fitting in "Blue 33":-

and this shows that th TF box is a bit larger/wider than the F one:-

and this is how I modified it:-

The original intake was blocked by a copper disc that is glued in place with car body sealer then taped over with duct tape. The intake horn was timmed so that it located as before on the bottom of the filter box. The original intake hose from the rear when strightened is just the right length to locate in the N/S intake with no resonator box in the way.

After this mod she was actually put onto a rolling road dyno and she produced 125.9 BHP corrected at the flywheel or if you prefer 102.1 bhp at the rear wheels or 127.7 PS corrected to the flywheel and 140 ft lb torque at 2950 rpm and 123 ft lb at 5250 rpm. Her exhaust is just an mild steel aftermarket replacement not a sports or performance one.

"Elsie" my 97 VVC arrived here with a K&N 57i fitted and I am less than impressed with it :nonod:

That photo was taken when she first arrived hence the filthy state.

Have cleaned it properly as well. Spent may months looking for this fabled roar and it's missing. It seems that to hear it one must drive with the throttle wide open everywhere as that's about the only time I can hear a roar. Usually all I hear is the deep exhaust tone from teh aftermarket Bosal M/S exhaust box. My intention it to remove the K&N and fit an proper enclosed cold air feed induction.

So personally I view the K&N 57i as a waste of money.
