Have been told it is not possible to remove binnacle without damaging it!

Not impossible, just difficult.

You need a long screwdriver through the top leading edge of the binnacle to reach three screws at the back that attach it to captive clips in the dash. It can be done and if you can get it off with the three clips intact, I'd be interested.
