Idle issue, particularly when hot

Well the last couple of weeks I've had a slight issue, where occasionally when idling at lights, the car would just splutter, nearly stall and then recover. The idle isn't erratic apart from that and if you sit and watch it, it can go a whole journey without doing it. Then suddenly, it will just slutter, cough, nearly die and then recover.
Today there has been a development. It's had its first long(ish) run of the year. Not just a potter about, but a decent run at autobahn speeds for about 40 miles. When I then tried to restart the car whilst it was still warm, it wouldn't fire in to life. It was if it was flooded (or starved) and when it eventually did fire up, it ran really badly for 30 seconds or so and I had to rev it hard to get it to recover.
Then all was well. Until I stopped and then tried to restart and it wasn't having it. 5 times on the key later and it fires up, running rough for 30 seconds and is then fine again.
Now if it had been my Rover 75 and bearing in mind I only had 1/4 of a tank in, I would suspect the in tank lift pump. But I don't know if these cars have them? Also, not sure why it should be an issue only when hot as it's fine when cold. I suspect the idle issue might be connected, but it might not.
Do those symptoms give any car doctors on here a clue as to what might be up?
tnx
Nick

She was recovered then and they changed all ignition parts (incl. spark plugs, leads, ignition coils. Everything okay after this.

the fuel pump is in the tank. Remove engine cover and you will see a round cover plate behind passenger headrest. Under this is fuel pump/level sensor.
No idea if that is your problem, but best get some diagnostics on it when it happens and see what is happening. Get half decent ODBII if it is a TF.
Will read air inlet temp and pressure, and i think fuel pressure, but not sure.
May give an indication as what is happening, or even a code.

Posted 6 years 4 months ago #186668Anyway, where is the cam sensor? I'm happy to take it out, clean it and put it back. But I've no idea where it is!
