This morning I went out in the tf followed by the Mrs for some 3 miles or so.....then I noticed she was flashing her headlights....on pulling over she said the overhead brake light on the boot was flashing on and off like the lights connected to police cars....I asked if the main brake lights were flashing thinking it may be the brake light switch....she replied they were not.....at work I checked the loom where it comes up by the hinge....all seamed ok....coming home I'd forgot about the light fault and had a volvo flashing it's lights.....got to go out in tf so I will just unplug the light for now to stop the rozzers pulling me over....if there is any left..????

Mark, I had a look at the wiring diagram and the high level brake light is connected directly to the rear lights in the lighting clusters.
No real reason why it should work without the rear brake lights coming on also.
There must be some serious fault afoot.
The only thing I am thinking is that the high level unit is LED and the tail lights are filament bulbs, maybe you have a short, with not enough current to light the tail lights, or maybe very dimly, but enough to drive the LED's on the high level light.
Maybe unplug each cluster in turn and see if one of those removes the fault.

Yes the high level brake light is led...Ive been jingling the hinge loom around to see if the brake light came on....nope.....wondering if brake light switch could be slightly making contact....and the led lights going crazy...and like sundance said not enough power to upset the bulb units

Went out this morning at 6am ...started the engine and then got out to move my van off the drive...on walking back to the tf I noticed the main brake lights were full on....a quick flick of the brake pedal and they were off....so the brake light switch is going to get a good look over. ..some time soon.....I've squirted the micro switch with wd40 for now.....led brake light reconnected....had no flashers in the rear view mirror....
