I’ve read other threads about this, but what I was wondering is – what’s all this stuff attached to the mechanism already? At first I thought it was an electronic opening mechanism already, but I guess it can’t be…

if it has a Bowden cable attatched to the lock release arm, then all it can be is a remote release mechanism. Not like anything I have seen before..any more pictures?

I think that the electrical connections are for the alarm and boot open light and the cable goes to the key plate. When you turn the key in the lock it pulls the cable which unlocks the latch.

Best regards

Hi there,
just to add a bit more to this -when I last traced out the total boot wiring there was no less than 9 independent wires in the boot loom to control all the functionality -that's without any additional boot release wiring.
Its no wonder then that any breaks or shorts in the boot loom can cause electrical mayhem or at worst fires.

Regards
Mike

Wondering how the picture looked different than what I have seen before, it appears your car has a cover over the boot lock rear where the bowden cable attaches to the lock. I have not seen a cover here before. Both my 04 TF's did not have one. Wondering if this was another project drive cut back....
If the cover is available, I will try to source one as it tidies up the boot a bit...apart from that, I think your boot release mechanism is pretty much standard.

Hi Sundance. Mine looks just the same with the cover over the lock . When I put a remote boot popper on I managed to cover that to match it .

It's not on my 1999 Mk2 F and I can't find it in Rimmers catalogue. If anyone knows where to source these I would be interested because as Sundance said, it does tidy the boot a bit.

I have a feeling that the cover comes from a ZR.

To be fair it is the typical cheap bargain basement thing you would find on MG/ ROVER. I wouldn't expect that anyone would stock it . It's just a flimsy piece of foam . Can't say I saw it on my ZR as the lock was covered by a large plastic panel .

Umm, this was behind the "large plastic panel".
