Alternator bracket 'O' ring
Whilst changing my timing belt recently, i found that the bottom bolt was missing from the alternator adjuster link, which was wedged against the block, but the belt was tight so it must have been left like this by a PO!
The small adjuster bolt sheared as well, and the belt is squealing, so i'll have to run the car up on ramps anyway to tension it the traditional way with a length of wood and nipping up the bolt, but will consider one of the adjustable links in the long term.
The spacer was also missing, so i turned up a simple spacer, but I now understand that the standard arrangement has an 'O' ring between the spacer and the block. Is this 'O' ring required / what purpose does it serve? Is this bolt supposed to be lubricated and the 'O' ring retains the lubricant to allow it to pivot, in which case should the mounting bolt have threadlock on it?

The bolt isn't lubricated.
I think the 'O' ring holds the bolt in place during assembly.
