Even being Irish I follow the German tradition to celebrate Christmas on 24th.

So a very happy Christmas to you all! All the best for 2019!
Please remember: a MG is for life, not just for Christmas.

And finally the annual happy Christmas dog:

Hi Graham. Haven't you been down this route with your TF recently / earlier this year? The F/TF alternator has to put up with a very harsh environment in that being sited where there is no direct airflow to cool it . This has a detrimental affect on the diodes that control the charge . I have owned my TF for five years and it has covered little mileage . During the first year I was concerned about the lack of voltage being generated by the alternator. I changed the regulator within the alternator as I needed to check that it was a bit iffy . I know the age of our beloved MG's tends to dictate how much we spend on them , especially when it comes to quality of the parts . The thing is , once I had diagnosed that the alternator was being short changed by the regulator , I bought a genuine replacement unit . This reply is going on a bit due having one or two seasonal drinkies so I'll stop . If as I suspect you have poor voltage from the alternator , I would suspect that the regulator is the culprit. But then again I am a bit p****d.

John is right, the alternators output should be the value on the voltmeter when the engine is running.
A good example of this was yesterday when my TF had yet again another flat battery after standing for 6 days. Not enough to flash the lights when unlocking it. As soon as the engine was jump started, everything was spot on, even with a flat battery - the alternator was doing all the work.
I would be looking at either the alternator or voltage regulator, then for badly corroded connections on the output or main fuse. After that check all the earth points on the vehicle.
Final check would be of course a new battery, just in case it is dragging the alternator down a bit, but to be honest, if there was a cell down you would be looking at a dead battery anyway.

Let us know how you go on...
