Passenger window fault

So my daughter broke my TF at the weekend. She lowered the passenger side window and that was that, it wouldn't go back up. No clicking from the relays, nothing. The drivers side was fine, it would click away, but the passenger side was deadly silent. And all this, before a 300 mile drive home.

So I had to take the door card off, snip the wires to the motor and connect directly to the battery. I got the window back up, proving that the motor was ok. I reconnected the wires with some crimp connectors and to my surprise, all was well, it was working again. Up and down, fine.

So, since it didn't click, when pressing the button, are you thinking ecu relay? I can do that. Or are you thinking motor? I would have thought it would click even if it wouldn't move if it was the motor.

Answers on a postcard please. It'll give me something to do one weekend! :)

thanks

Nick

I would suspect your switch. How often do you open passenger window? I would say that contacts on the switch might be dirty.

Could be right about the switch, Mr Roverlike, I remember reading in a recent article in MG Enthusiast that the editors car had window trouble and that the drivers side window was linked to the passenger side to get it working as the passenger side worked directly from the switch, and was not powered by the relays in the SCU. I have noted that the switches can be prone to burnt contacts due to the load taken by the window motor. Suggest a contact clean up with a light abrasive or a replacement switch may do the job.
The drivers side window goes through the SCU because of the semi auto lowering function. The the passenger side does not have this option and is direct from the switch.
Check out page 58 of the eletrical drawings for details...

My window lift switches give trouble from time to time, I've become adept at whipping out the switch, stripping it down, cleaning the contacts, slapping it back together and shoving it back ln........All in a matter of minutes!
Had the same problems with Volvos and Jags

Ok, quality answers there guys! The switch contacts didn't occur to me and to answer your question, it only ever gets lowered when my daughter is in the passenger seat because for some reaso, she must have the windows down when the roof is off. I never lower them and its probably the first time it was lowered in months.

Cheers, I'll take a look.

We found that if one lowers the windows about 2" when the roof is down you get less buffeting.
