I have just watched Guy Martins program about rebuilding a mk1 Spitfire.

Late in the program they point out that the rear view mirror wasn't standard fit but the pilot wanted to see who was behind so fitted a mirror from a MG.

Do you know of any other examples.

I one used some telephone cable I had in the boot to operate my carburetor when the throttle cable snapped in the middle of no-where on my Mk.IV Spitfire many years ago, I used it as a pull wire operating it by hand to get me home.....but I think you mean the aircraft, James!

I saw it; I think it was a couple of years ago if it's the same programme. I enjoyed it v much. If it's been on recently, I'll watch it again on catchup.

I spend a lot of time at Brightlingsea on the Colne/Blackwater estuary and every now and again someone flies a Spitfire over and gives it a proper workout over the estuary. Awesome sight and awesome sound! :-)

Yes I saw this programme presented by Guy Martin a while ago, great bloke and knows some stuff. If I remember correctly he had a Merlin engine set up and running on a mobile test rig before it went into the Spitfire.

I doubt the Merlin had head gasket problems?

I hope not, failure mid-flight would be embarrassing.
