Surging Steptronic
My '99 F Steptronic 'surges' when I am trying to move slowly such as when I am parking. This happens in both drive and reverse. It also engages drive and reverse with a definite 'clunk'. Otherwise it works fine. The tick over is correct as is the fluid level. The fluid and filter have recently been renewed which, initially, significantly improved the performance of the box. Any Ideas?

Has the correct fluid been put in the box ? It sounds like the oil shear point breaking down hence the clunk

Yes, definitely the one recommended. What exactly is the oil shear point?

The shear point is the physical strength of the oil when in no longer lubricates, only in this case its hydraulic pressure.

Thanks for that. We live and learn but I'm not sure that it takes me forward.

All I can add is if it was ok to start and it's the correct Austin Rover spec oil, and the drive has deteriorated have you checked the oil level since initially filling ? Iwould be nice to know what the issue was if you get it sorted.

Hi Steve
I checked the level only yesterday and it is up to the full mark. The 'surging' has now become a 'juddering' accompanied by a screeching noise so if you get any good ideas (or even half good), please let me know!

Sounds like a torque converter problem..
I would be looking at the oil again or possibly gearbox oil pump..
Which oil was used/recommended by whom?
best of luck...
