Hi,
When putting back the starter motor after removing the flywheel locking tool, I noticed these wires.
Anybody know what they are?
Looks like they should be connected.
Cheers,
Iain.

Does the car have a low coolant alarm fitted?
I suspect these are low coolant alarm wires which are meant to be connected into the the speedometer wires. (going by a very vague memory)

Hi . I think they are reversing light wires . Easy way to check , turn the ignition on to just put the ignition lights on and not to start the engine . Then if you are flexible enough to reach in and briefly connect the wires with the car in reverse gear you should see the lights come on .

Thanks Workscooper, you have cleared my memory on the wiring, yes they still could be low coolant alarm wires, which connect onto the wires for the reverse light switch, NOT the speedometer wiring as I had earlier mentioned.
The low coolant alarm takes it's power from the feed wire of the reverse light switch with one terminal and feeds power into the reverse light switch.
And if you don't have a low coolant alarm fitted..........FIT ONE! It is insane not to have one on these cars, don't whinge about the cost...... it's a bloody side cheaper than a cooked engine!

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.
It seems likely it is the reverse lights, they just look a bit aftermarket. I'll check when I hook the battery back up again.
I brought a coolant alarm (contactless one) a few weeks ago, will be fitting before I put the engine cover back on. I looked at the expansion bottle before buying the kit and could not see any sensors or wires comming from it. Mines a 03/04 model year so it might have a few bits of the factory coolant alarm installed but I could not see any.
Just broke the arial while messing about removing the broken bits of the old starter motor from the loom, the old starter motor fell to pieces when I removed it, amazed it still worked. The arial appears to be made from cheese, i just leaned against it a little and it fell off. If you are going to work near it or just look at it........unscrew it, don't do what I did.
Cheers,
Iain.

The design of the reverse switch dates back to the '70s, hence the bullet connectors that were common until the late '70s.
