Hi and welcome to the forum
The gear change shouldn't be any harder than any other car but there is a lot that can be done to improve it,
How stiff is the clutch peddle?
How is the gear selection with the engine off?

One easy thing that you can do, which I found made a big difference, is to change the gearbox oil. It may never have been done as it's a 100,000mile service interval. In my 2004 TF 135, I used Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75w90, which I would happily recommend.

I too replaced the gearbox oil at 57,000 miles (96 MGF) the old oil was as black as the ''Ace of Spades'' i refilled with Castrol Synrans 75w90 on the advice of Roger Parker at MGOC, the gear changing has certainly improved. ( the new oil was light straw in colour).
