Mystery klonk rear nearside

The stake nut is at the end of the drive shaft . You will see it if you remove either rear wheel . The nut has a soft outer collar that when torqued up you punch into the groove in the drive shaft . On my TF it was finger tight and no sign of the collar being punched into the shaft .

Thanks for the explanation. I had a look - the nut was torqued up to a fair-the-well but the collar hadn't been driven into the slot so I've done that. Unfortunately that wasn't the source of the noise but perhaps the wheel won't come off?

Well atleast you have eliminated that part from the diagnosis.
Keep us all informed as to the progress as it helps us all with our upkeep with these cars .

Hi

There are many how to on driver side engine mount.

I'm doing the passenger side. Is it like this?

Support engine.
Undo bolt going through the bush
Remove the bolts onto the engine
Torx?
Hope I can slide out the mount so I can replace the bush

I've replaced the passenger side engine mount. Can't get bolts off drivers side mount. No change in klonk. I paid a gentleman in Uckfield £270 to fail to diagnose the problem. His advice was almost as useful as the suggestions on here. Grrr. Anyway is there someone I can take it to to help me identify the noise? I hate driving the damn thing

Unfortunately mystery sounds are something that really need to be heard in order to diagnose properly. Maybe there is a knowledgeable forum member nearby that might be able to help.
It's also unfortunate that these days most mechanics couldn't tell the difference between their armpit from their arsehole without first having a sniff!
You may need to consult a proper specialist who knows these cars, I believe someone here will be able to suggest such a trusted specialist convenient to you.

Hi. I spent £270 at the MG specialist in Uckfield😠 and another £20 at the specialist in Maidstone near Headcorn Neither were any good. I've done everything they suggested.

I'm definitely going to need in person help from someone here please. An infinite number of pints or any other currency for someone who can listen in person and lives within a 200 mile radius.

Bit desperate now

I'd help but as I'm in Australia, I'm a bit outta your way.
These specialists are they MGF /TF specialists or someone who mainly works on older MGs like MGBs?
Our cars are vastly different to the older types, in fact other than the MG octagon logo they have absolutely nothing in common.

You have probably done this but have you checked anti roll bars and drop links, I had a Lound klong a few years ago and found a drop link at fault but it too a good bit of levering to find it, even then I was sceptical but it was said drop link.

Yes I've replaced the drop links and the bushings on the arb.

I wondered about the lower linkage or the trailing arm?

Also first one was apparently a tf specialist, but the £270 guy did classics and tf's.

Failing finding anyone a bit closer I'm going to have crawl under the car again and use some scientific method.

That £270 guy has a bloody cheek charging that for being unable to diagnose the problem.

And no it isn't something in the boot 🤣

I hope I haven't offended someone here. It's a lot of money tho.
