Here's what can be done with hydraulic portapowers, oxy-acetalene, a mig welder, some parts and a lot of determination!
By rights I should've binned it, but I'm a stubborn bugger and won't be beaten.

The roobar is scare away errant Commodores! :lol:
It runs a 302 Cleveland V8 (4.9 litre) with a 500 cfm Edelbrock 4bbl carb and a C4 auto trans.
Here's another, this one is a mate's now, its a Ford F250 4x4
Note the bonnet mascot: a taxidermied kangaroo head! We called it the Roo Bar & Grill! It ran a Ford 351 Cleveland V8 (5.8 litre) and a 4 speed manual but now sports a Ford 460 V8 (7.5 litre), a ZF 5 speed manual with a 2 speed new process transfer case, it runs on LPG and pulls harder that a schoolboy with a stick book! :lol:
It too had an altercation with a damned Commodore, not as serious and easy fixed, but it had a much more serious altercation with a semitrailer, it was in a much worse state than the F100, it too was rebuilt!
The devilishly handsome looking fella leaning on the roobar is yours truly!

Another of my old trucks, this is a '61 International AA120 4x4
It now belongs to another mate and is undergoing a full restoration.
It had an International 282 L6 (4.7 litre) but now is getting an International 345 V8 (5.6 litre)

Unfortunately it got Liberaced by a semitrailer loaded with potatoes!
It was too far gone even for me to save!
In the background you'll see my Land-Rover series III, at that time it was powered by a Leyland P76 4.4 litre alloy V8, and standard Land-Rover driveline, it now sports a Ford 351 Cleveland V8 (5.8 litre), 600cfm 4bbl Holley and a Ford C4 3 speed auto mated to the Land-Rover 2 speed transfer case.
It's sitting at a mates place waiting for me to do some more much needed work.

How did you acquire your engineering skills? A lot gained from experience I would think, but you must have started from somewhere.

Ah well....It's made round to go round!
I've always had a fascination for machinery, in fact Mum tells me my first word was car and I knew the name of every car on the road as a toddler. While other kids were looking at the usual kids picture books, apparently I preferred car mags.
The family had a racing team and as a kid I always was up to my eyeballs in grease with a spanner in my hand :lol: Other kids were playing with Matchbox cars while I had real racecars to play with!
So as you say very hands on, and I had dad to explain how things ticked, and always race mechanics about to learn from too.
My maternal Grandfather was also a pretty handy sort of bloke, as he was a pram manufacturer and he taught me allsorts of useful stuff as well!
In fact I've still got lot of both of their old tools, including stuff from the racing team.
I became a Mechanic, did a bit of farming as well, which taught me self sufficiency (it also taught me that you can end up with a small fortune from farming, provided you start off with a large one! ), then moved out of the motor trade and into industrial engineering as a multi-traded tradesman, and have worked in such industries as manufacturing, petrochemical, construction, demolition, energy, shipbuilding, rail and telecommunications.
Always learning and gaining new skills and qualifications but always very hands on and I'll have a crack at anything. It's the best way to learn to bite of more than you can chew, then chew like hell! :lol:
I've always loved those big old offroaders and pickup trucks but also loved muscle cars and proper sports cars too!
