Here's a great tool to remove sumps, timing covers and suchlike, that are stuck on by gasket sealer.
Just put the blade into the joint and give the anvil (the rectangular block) a tap with a hammer.
Here's one in a set with scouring discs and mandrel, useful for gasket removal.
Removal solvents are useful.
Plastic scrapers
Steel scrapers
A pneumatic gasket scraping tool
I'd be bloody careful using one of these, it would be very easy to damage the work surface. It's a tool I'd only use on steel or cast iron surfaces.
I like to use one of these
They have a carbide blade insert
Use in conjunction with a gasket striping solvent they are extremely effective.
Using any of these tools for the first time, I suggest you practice on some old scarp parts to get your technique right before attacking your good bits!
And don't use the sump removal tool to separate your cylinder head from the engine block!
