Rear brakes upgrade to AP - THEORETICAL ONLY

Theoretical only. This change requires alterations to the hub which may weaken it. Do not attempt to do this on your car!

As I have a spare set of AP callipers i thought i would see how much work would be involved in fitting 304 discs and Aps to the rear.
The first issue is the obvious one - No handbrake. So I have ordered a set of additional spot callipers from Hispec. When they arrive I will detail how they would be fitted to the hub.

The next issue surprised me a little - the fixing holes in the hub don't line up with the threaded fixing holes in the APcalliper. The rear hub holes are at a wider spacing than the AP holes. So they would need to be redrilled. Further, even with the holes in the right place the callipers still won't fit without some re-shaping of the hub fixing area..

That's all for now. Thought people might be interested.

Is my assumption correct that reworking the hub fixing holes is a much better idea than trying to rework the calliper holes?

David..won't you need to space the callipers out from the hub centre anyway..for the larger discs..in which case you will need to fabricate a bracket with compatible holes for the hub at one end and holes for the callipers at the other..It doesn't matter that the callipers holes don't marry with the hub holes....you may also need to offset or inset the callipers to centre the discs..The trickiest bit is fabricating the brackets so everything is in alignment.. :yesnod:

No. AFAIK, the AP calliper is in the correct position in relation to the hub and disc, just the holes don't match up. If you think about it the aps fit straight onto the front hubs without spacing. Obviously I will need a bracket/spacer for the spot handbrake calliper.

Sounds an interesting project but isn't an easier upgrade path to use 280mm discs like those from MGFMania?

Of course if you already have a pair of APs sitting there doing nothing....

It's certainly easier to go the '280mm disc with the blocked out calliper' route. However you still have the crappy original rear calliper... and I already had a set of APs spare, so :shrug: :lol:

I'm intrigued to know how and where the AP and additional spot caliper will fit. Will you have to mount the AP on the leading edge of the disc so that the handbrake cable routes to the same location for the spot caliper? Or am I totally not understanding (highly likely) how the additional caliper works.

The Ap calliper is THEORETICALLY attached in the same position as the original. The handbrake calliper will be theoretically fitted at a position where a theoretically re routed handbrake cable would fit. In theory, of course.

It seems dangerous to me as you run the risk of rear end loch up and visiting the nearest roadside hedge

Surely not with ABS ?
My TF is definitely underbraked at the rear, ABS comes in on the fronts (4pot) when I anchor it in anger, bigger rears must be an improvement.
