Hi everybody – after nearly 8 years’ Rover 75 (CDTI) ownership, and having retired recently, I rather fancy one of these little MGs as a second hobby/fun car, as they seem nice – and also very cheap :omg:

I’ve read bits and pieces, particularly the good old HGF, which also of course afflicts the K-series engine in the 75s. If we put that issue to one side, what should I know about buying one of these machines? MGF? TF? Do they rust much? Where? Can big people (I’m 6’2”, reasonably heavily built) drive them comfortably?

I love Rovers & MGs, and would really like one of these to drive and tinker with – hope it ends up that way. I think maybe I fancy the VVC model… but how can something like this be so cheap?? There seem to be a fair few around the price range, some low mileage…

Thanks :D

Hi and welcome to the forum

MGs and Rovers are generally under valued, and TBH that car you have linked to is over priced compared to many.

You need to test drive a tf or at least sit in one....my stepfather has short legs and a tall body...not noticed before untill he got in my tf...no choice with him the roof had to be down and his head was above the top line of the windscreen...I'm sure to be legal he would of had to wear goggles.

Thanks guys - OK, need to sit in one, for sure. Looks like I can't even type properly at my advance age, I'm 6'1", not 6'2"... I'm sure that inch will make all the difference :-D

:welcome2:
With the height thing, it depends...
Are you that height because you have long legs? No problem.
Are you that height because you have a long body? Could be an issue...

Back in the mists of time, I seem to recall someone on here lowering the seat a little bit so they could fit in.

Do they rust, not half they can rust!

When going out to look to buy one, it really is a must to only consider buying one that you have thoroughly checked underneath and to do this properly it is best to stick them up in the air on a 4 post or similar life.

If you haven't done so already slowly read through this http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group1/info/MGF_buying.htm

There are so many major rust areas, but arguably (for me) the main areas to check are the sills (both inner and outer), the lower front suspension units and of course the subframes, then there are the front wings and heaven knows where else!

Good luck.
