Hi All,

I had a couple of new TF160s a few years ago, and now have a somewhat older one.

I'm in need of a replacement VVC solenoid unit, but haven't been able to source on e anywhere yet. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum.

What is wrong with your current unit?

Hi James,

I've a P1521 error code, and have asked the garage to check all the connections based on much of the feedback around that error on line. They've done all of that, and can't get rid of the error, which of course is now an MOT failure.

There is also an oil leak around the seal.

The suggestion is that a new unit is needed. Open to comments if people think that will work, or if more attention should be paid to the connectors and wiring first. In any event the unit has to come off to sort the seal.

Thanks

Just a quick thought.
Two electrical plugs can be incorrectly connected ( swapped) on the vvc mechs. This usually results in a rev limit issue. Check your engine for the rev limit, if it is 5500, the plugs have been switched sometime. Possibly when the last work was done on the engine.
Swapping them back will probably cure the problem. It's the brown and black that can be mixed up.

Are you getting the MIL warning light?

Does leaving the plugs unplugged make a difference?

I thought I would just post a quick update here in case it's useful for anyone else in the future.

I was originally looking for a new VVC unit, having been told by the garage that was needed to sort out a P1521 error code (that had appeared after they'd done the timing belt and water pump). Giving up with those guys, who seemed disinterested and likely to make things worse rather than better, I headed to a local specialist.

Most of the posts here and elsewhere suggested it could be as simple as some switched leads. Sadly, not as simple as that, and a lengthy session of diagnostics ensued, with the advantage of themm having a car for parts to switch in and out to check them out.

In the end, having replaed the wiring loom on the way, they found that the VVC unit had been incorrectly timed, and on correcting that all is well again. In fact, now I realise quite how badly it had been running!

Moral of the story - know when to give up with a local garage that don't know what they're doing, and find a good specialist. Thanks to Just Right Autos in Witney for their help.
